Team News

  • Pardew elected to stick with 2 up front last time out, as he has done for most of the season. However, this time round, January signing Papiss Demba Cisse is a doubt with a groin injury which forced him off in last week's draw with Wolves. He is however, rated as likely to be passed fit for the derby.
  • Otherwise, Pardew has no new injury concerns and he may return Ryan Taylor to left back after playing him at right-mid last week, with Ben Arfa a possibility to come back in.
  • Sunderland will need to pick themselves up from the surprise 4-0 thrashing they found themselves on the end of at West Brom last week.
  • They could be without Phil Bardsley for this game after he withdrew from the Scotland squad for the round of international friendlies this week with a calf injury.
  • Fraizer Campbell could start up front, with Cattermole missing out.
  • Goalkeepers Gordon and Westwood are both doubtful, but it likely that Mignolet will continue between the posts either way.

Prediction

  • The Tyne-Wear derby is usually something of a spectacle, and equally unpredictable. The last 6 Premier League derbies between these sides have produced 3 Newcastle wins, 2 draws and 1 Sunderland win. There have also been red cards in two of the last 3 encounters.
  • Newcastle will still be reeling after they threw away a 2-goal lead at home to struggling Wolves last time out. Pardew was unsurprisingly extremely disappointed with the result and what better way to raise spirits than with a win over rivals Sunderland.
  • Sunderland, meanwhile, were brought back down to earth after a promising start to life under Martin O'Neill, as they lost 4-0 at West Brom. The Irishman celebrated his 60th birthday this week and will be looking for the perfect present from his players at the Sports Direct Arena. However, Sunderland haven't beaten their rivals since 2008 and Alan Pardew will be keen for his side to continue their push towards the top 4, particularly with Arsenal hitting some form of late.
