Team News

  • Sporting continued their recent revival as they won for the third time in four games at Espanyol at the weekend.
  • The Asturians are now just four points off survival and with Villarreal occupying the final place above the drop zone, they can close that gap to one with a victory over the Yellow Submarine.
  • Javier Clemente will be forced into a couple of changes from the side that started at Cornellà-El Prat, as Ayoze is suspended and Miguel de las Cuevas is a major injury doubt after pulling up with a muscle injury in the second-half.
  • With Roberto Canella also out injured, Pedro Orfila is expected to deputise at left-back and Formose Mendy could make his return to the stating line-up in De las Cuevas' absence.
  • Villarreal, meanwhile, continue to edge towards survival in tiny steps, after another draw at the weekend - their third in a row - took them four points clear of Sporting and Real Zaragoza.
  • Miguel Angel Lotina has only lost once in his eight-game spell in charge and with another draw a favourable result for the visitors, he will line up in his usual conservative manner.
  • Jose Catala should return at left-back after serving a suspension last time out, but that is expected to be the only change as Marco Ruben is preferred over Nilmar in the lone striker role.

Prediction

  • A real relegation six-pointer could see Villarreal pulled into a three-way tussle for the final two relegation places with just two games to go.
  • However, the Yellow Submarine have been difficult to beat since Lotina took charge and they do still have the greater quality between the two sides.
  • Moreover, with Sporting having to go for the win, that could suit the visitors' counter-attacking style and they should have enough for at least another point towards their survival tally.
