- Ever Banega is the only new absentee, after his car rolled over his foot at a petrol station, leaving him with a double fracture.

- Matthew Upson is back from suspension but may not play, with Robert Huth likely to be given some playing time, having been suspended from domestic competition in recent weeks.

- Valencia come into the game off the back of a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Barcelona and a certain Lionel Messi at the weekend. Stoke, meanwhile, faced somewhat different opposition, as they came out 2-0 victors over lowly Crawley Town in the FA Cup.
- That was the first game in 5 that Stoke had avoided loss, though their only wins in their last 9 games in all competitions have come against lower league opposition. They need a drastic upturn in their form if they are to have any success at Valencia.
- Valencia have been on mixed form recently, winning only 3 of their last 12 games, but at home they are a force to be reckoned with. They have won 7 of their last 10 home games, and won 2 out of 3 of their home games in the Champions League this season. They held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw and should be comfortable favourites to hold off Stoke here.
