Team News

  • Sam Alladyce may have a fully fit squad to choose from this weekend, though there are doubts over the fitness of captain Kevin Nolan and Jack Collison.
  • The latter withdrew from international duty with Wales as a precaution, along with new signing James Collins, who, if fit, could face his former club just weeks after making a return to Upton Park.
  • West Ham pulled off a real coup in the capture of France midfielder Alou Diarra, and he could start alongside fellow newcomer Mohamed Diame if Nolan is not fit.
  • Paul Lambert has a number of injury concerns ahead of his first game in charge of Villa, with Albrighton, Dunne and Agbonlahor all out.
  • The club were boosted by the news that club captain Stiliyan Petrov has gone into remission having been diagnosed with acute leukemia earlier in the year.
  • Nathan Delfouneso is a slight doubt, but Herd and Lowton are in contention and the latter may feature with Alan Hutton seemingly having been cast aside, and potentially Stephen Warnock joining him on the way out.
  • Fellow new signings Ron Vlaar, Karim El Ahmadi and Brett Holman could start, despite the latter being subject of a poor tackle on international duty.

Prediction

  • West Ham have really strengthened their midfield and are likely to stick with a 4-3-3 formation in order to utilize that area with three strong central midfielders, though they will still need to prove themselves at the back.
  • Paul Lambert has been quick to cast out the deadwood from last season, immediately endearing himself to the fans. His signings are relatively unknown to English supporters so it remains to be seen how his recruits from Holland will fit in, but all have shown qualities in pre-season.
  • This is a hard game to call, but newly promoted West Ham may be slight favourites at home given Villa's injury problems.
