Team News

  • Roberto Martinez is likely to stick with his preference of playing 3 centre-backs, after the success he had with that tactic towards the end of last season. He will play with full backs that will join the midfield when going forwards but become defenders when they do not have it.
  • If new signing Ivan Ramis is to start, one of Figueroa, Alcaraz or Caldwell will have to be taken out of the back three, though one option would be to play Figueroa at left-back.
  • Ryo Miyaichi could also get a debut, though he will have to fight off competition from Maloney and Gomez, while Arouna Kone may come off the bench.
  • Chelsea have new signing Oscar back from Olympic duty, though the Brazilian is unlikely to start having had little time to settle in at his new club.
  • Di Matteo could well stick with the same lineup that started the Community Shield loss to Man City last weekend, with Ivanovic available after the FA ruled that he would not have to serve a suspension despite being sent off in that game.
  • Marko Marin is a doubt with a hamstring injury, while Daniel Sturridge picked up a toe injury last week and had to withdraw from the England squad, though he is likely to return in time for this match.

Prediction

  • Wigan went on a fantastic run of form at the end of last season, which saw them comfortably survive the relegation battle and retain the Premier League status for yet another season. Roberto Martinez has remained at the helm despite being linked with a move over the summer and the side are in good stead for another season.
  • Chelsea have made some big summer signings after their FA Cup and Champions League successes last season, and look significantly stronger than they did before the summer. Eden Hazard will make his Premier League debut and it will be interesting to see how well he does.
  • Chelsea have won 4 of their previous 6 visits to Wigan and having already played a competitive game last weekend, they are already in mode for the season, and could start the game at a higher tempo. They have a history of scoring a fair few goals against Wigan, and if the Latics aren't careful we could have a repeat.
