Team News

  • Chelsea began their season in emphatic style, scoring 2 early Eden Hazard-inspired goals before shutting Wigan out and retain their 2 goal lead for the rest of the game. They were without Ramires for that game but he has recovered from the illness that kept him out of that game and he should start here.
  • Daniel Sturridge will be pushing for a place in the starting eleven having recovered from a toe injury sufficiently to make the bench at the weekend.
  • Marko Marin is again out having missed that game with a hamstring injury.
  • Reading could start with an unchanged lineup after recusing a draw late on at home to Stoke on their return to the Premier League.
  • Jobi McAnuff was a doubt for that game but managed the full 90, and he should be in the starting XI once again, while on the left of midfield, Garath McCleary impressed after replacing Robson-Kanu in the second half and will continue to push for a starting berth.
  • Jason Roberts serves the second of his 3 match suspension so will be absent once again, while Kebe is out with a hamstring injury.

Prediction

  • Although Chelsea got the 3 points at the DW Stadium on Sunday, they also displayed that they still have some weaknesses that need addressing if they are to challenge this season. Wigan created a few openings as players found themselves free in dangerous positions when Chelsea ought to have seen the result out more comfortably after going 2 goals up early on.
  • Reading, meanwhile, snatched a late draw against Stoke and will have been delighted with getting their first goal and first point of the season at the first opportunity. Another point, let alone another goal, at Stamford Bridge, however, will be a much harder task.
  • Chelsea will be confident with their home advantage against a newly promoted Reading side, who seemed to favour a Stoke-like long ball game in their first match, playing more long ball (71) than any other side. Chelsea should be able to break them down and win themselves another 3 points.
