Team News

  • Wayne Rooney remains absent for United, though Robin van Persie, who was forced off for Holland during the week, has been confirmed as fit to play. There is a chance he will be rested nonetheless.
  • Shinji Kagawa was also taken off while on international duty, and may not be risked ahead of United's Champions League clash with Galatasaray. That could mean that Ferguson reverts to a 4-4-2 formation with Welbeck alongside van Persie up front.
  • Darren Fletcher completed 90 minutes for the reserves earlier this week and Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that he is in contention for a place in the squad.
  • Antolin Alcaraz has returned from suspension but has a slight groin injury and Jean Beausejour is a minor doubt with the injury that forced him off at Stoke.
  • Roberto Martinez is likely to revert to the eleven that started the win at Southampton earlier this season.
  • That will see an otherwise unchanged lineup, with Maloney and Kone flanking lone striker Franco Di Santo.

Prediction

  • Manchester United have already slipped up once this season and they won't want to do so again in a home game against Wigan. The Red Devils lost 1-0 at the DW Stadium towards the tail end of last season, but have not conceded at home to the Latics since Leighton Baines scored a penalty in December 2006 - a game in which United's goalscorers were Cristiano Ronaldo and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
  • United have looked rather shaky at the back this season, with their 2 wins 3-2 victories over Fulham and Southampton, while also losing at Everton. However, with Robin van Persie scoring goals, as things stand they do not need to worry about the goals they are letting in, but merely about scoring more than the opposition can.
  • United will get the three points, but Martinez has built a Wigan side that is difficult to beat and also scores goals. That will be no different, but United will prevail, possibly with a repeat scoreline of the day when Wigan last scored here.
