Team News

  • By the time this match comes around, it will have been three and a half weeks since Reading's last Premier League match - the 4-2 loss at Stamford Bridge.
  • Jason Roberts has now returned from the suspension that he incurred at the end of last season, but he is carrying a knock and Brian McDermott has hinted he will not be ready to return in time for the Spurs clash.
  • Jimmy Kebe has returned to training following a hamstring injury, and may feature, though more likely just from the bench.
  • Andre Villas-Boas continues his quest for a first win as Spurs' manager, and this time he has all of his players available to him, after a flurry of late activity in the transfer window. It is difficult to know, and will thus be interesting to see, the first XI that he will select.
  • Jermain Defoe has started all 3 games so far this season, but Emmanuel Adebayor should have had enough time to regain his fitness by now, and the Togolese striker should start up front.
  • Dembele should make his first start in a Tottenham shirt, with Livermore dropping to the bench, while Clint Dempsey is likely to battle it out with Gylfi Sigurdsson for the AMC spot.
  • Hugo Lloris will challenge Brad Friedel for the number 1 spot.

Prediction

  • Reading host Spurs at the Madejski Stadium, with both sides seeking their first win of the campaign. Reading have given a good account of themselves so far, despite playing only 2 games so far, most notably pushing Chelsea to the wire, showing that they can give the best teams a run for their money.
  • Spurs, meanwhile, have been below par. Most people have come to expect more of them than they have offered this season, and while they have been shaky at the back, conceding late goals to drop points in each of their opening games, they have also been lacklustre going forwards, with the loss of Luka Modric hitting hard.
  • In Mousa Dembele Spurs have a lesser replacement, and while they have the quality in other parts of the pitch to hurt Reading, they are low on confidence and do not yet have the winning mentality that they need. Reading will pump balls forward and the Spurs defence could struggle to deal with that method of attack. Both teams will probably concede, and could well cancel each other out.

  • Well Dempsey came on the winger role...although Sigurdsson came off for a more defensive player due to score, so nothing definitive there.

  • @Infamous and @LessBlues Yes Dempsey can play on the right, but the question is if he can perform better than Lennon on the right. I think his ideal position has always been behind the striker. He should start off on the bench and replace one of the AMs later on in the game.

  • @Bashirali I agree with Lloris being a great keeper, I disagree with your criticism on Spurs. I think clubs are right to put newly signed players on the bench for the first few games, esp when you have good players in that position already. It makes the players more humble and adjusts them to the league easier.

  • I find it funny that Spurs bought, a keeper named numerous times to be 3rd best keeper in the world after Casillas & Neuer, yet they decide to put him on the bench......no offense to friedel, he had a great season last year, but Lloris is better than Friedel.

  • @Infamous. Yes, indeed Dempsey has played the advanced winger role any times, club and country. It's not a special insight I possess.

  • @LessBlues Good point. Lennon has been in poor form and needs a break anyway. Dempsey has played a good number of games on the right wing for Fulham.

  • Dempsey isn't really a creative AM. Might he take Lennon's spot? Dempsey strikes me as similar to Podolski in that he can thrive in a nominally wide position from which he can move into the center.

  • 2-2 draw

  • COYS!

  • @YeboahsRightPeg What have Tottenham done this season though?? Nothing! This will most probably be a draw.
