Team News

  • New signing Adam Johnson was forced to withdraw from the England squad last week with a thigh injury, leaving him doubtful for the Premier League game against Liverpool here.
  • Lee Cattermole got a dead leg in the draw at Swansea but after a 2 week break from club football he should be fine to play.
  • Wes Brown, Phil Bardsley and David Vaughan have missed the opening games of the season through injury, though the latter could return this weekend.
  • Brendan Rodgers' only new injury concern ahead of a tough trip to Sunderland may be the fitness of Jose Enrique, who is rated as 50-50 to play this weekend.
  • Joe Allen missed Wales' opening World Cup qualifier against Belgium last week due to illness, but he made a swift enough recovery to play in Serbia, and will be fine to make the starting lineup.
  • It will be interesting to see whether Raheem Sterling retains his place in the XI. The youngster was called up to the England squad last week, but he certainly won't be thought of as a shoe-in to start every week. Stewart Downing will be keen to be given a chance to earn his place on the wing.

Prediction

  • Martin O'Neill's Sunderland and Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool meet here, both going in search of their first league win of the season. With one of Sunderland's game having been postponed, they have drawn their 2 matches, while Liverpool have only picked up one point from their opening 3 games.
  • Brendan Rodgers has yet to successfully implement his passing game at Liverpool which worked so well at Swansea last season, with his players keeping the ball more than they did under Kenny Dalglish, but still struggling to get the results.
  • With Sunderland finally having acquired a striker in Steven Fletcher, they look a significantly more dangerous outfit. The Scot has scored both of their goals this season in his one appearance, and could well add to that here against a suspect-looking Liverpool defence. The Stadium of Light is a difficult place to go to but with both teams desperate not to lose, the teams could share the spoils.
