Team News

  • James Perch returned from injury to face Stoke but his early booking in that match was his fifth of the season, meaning he is suspended for the Monday night visit of Wigan.
  • Newcastle's vast injury problems remain and they will need to start getting used to life without Yohan Cabaye as he is out for up to 3 months. They do not manage well without him and it is a huge loss to the side.
  • Ameobi and Obertan are doubts, while no fewer than 7 first teamers are almost certainly out.
  • Wigan were without all three of their main centre backs against Manchester City in the week, and it looks as though Figueroa, Piscu and Boyce may have to continue there, with Alacaraz still out, and Caldwell and Ramis both major doubts.
  • Jordi Gomez's recent hat trick should earn him a run in the side, particularly with Shaun Maloney likely to miss out through injury again. The Spaniard starts centrally for the Latics and drops deep into an attacking midfield role leaving Kone and Di Santo up front.

Prediction

  • Newcastle go into this game looking to avoid losing at St James' Park for the third consecutive time; something they have avoided since April 2009. They have, however, not lost in the Premier League in 7 home games against Wigan, winning 4 and drawing three.
  • Wigan will therefore be thought of as unlikely to win here, but they pulled off a wholly unexpected victory at Tottenham not so long ago and with Newcastle's injury problems they could well spring a surprise.
  • All three of the draws between these two sides at Newcastle have ended 2-2, and this one could be a repeat scoreline, with both sides shipping plenty of goals but also possessing the firepower to net a couple themselves.
Prediction:
2
