  • Jose Enrique picked up a hamstring injury in the win over QPR at the weekend and is touch-and-go to make it back in time for this fixture. Glen Johnson could play at left back with Andre Wisdom coming in on the right if necessary.
  • Stewart Downing seems to have hit some form and should keep his place on the right side of midfield, with Sterling on the opposite wing.
  • Lucas should be back in the starting XI in place of Jordan Henderson, alongside Allen and Gerrard in central midfield.
Sunderland
  • John O'Shea is almost certain to miss out after hobbling off during the loss to Tottenham at the weekend having earlier given his side a lead.
  • That will probably mean Kilgallon playing at left-back and Bramble coming in to central defence, with Bardsley having barely played in recent weeks.

  • Liverpool will hope to build on the 3-0 win they enjoyed over QPR last time out, but the result did little more than highlight their inconsistencies, having alternated between wins and losses in their last 5 league games, and only 5 wins in their last 12 outings.
  • Sunderland threw away a lead to lose against Spurs at the weekend, but were outplayed for most of that game and rarely threatened the opposition goal. Having previously won 2 games in a row, they will look to bounce back here.
  • Liverpool will not want to slip up immediately after winning so convincingly at QPR and the home crowd will be behind them in their endeavours here.
