Team News

  • Real will be looking to start where they left off last season after a remarkable campaign saw them finish champions with 100 points and having scored 121 league goals.
  • However, one of their few blips came at home to Valencia in April when Los Che came away with a deserved point from the Bernabeu after an end-to-end encounter that somehow finished 0-0.
  • With no major signings to parade Jose Mourinho is expected to name his preferred XI, although Marcelo may be rested in favour of Fabio Coentrao at left-back given the Brazilian's international commitments at the Olympics in recent weeks.
  • Mauricio Pellegrino meanwhile takes charge of Valencia for the first time and is expected to hand debuts to former Real Madrid midfielder Fernando Gago, Joao Pereira and Andres Guardado.
  • With Roberto Soldado doubtful through injury the Argentine may choose to select an extra holding midfielder alongside Gago and push Tino Costa slightly further forward to support Jonas up front.
  • Another Real old boy Sergio Canales is still someway off full fitness as he recovers from a cruciate knee ligament injury and Ever Banega will also miss the first few weeks of the season.

Prediction

  • Valencia, repeating the pattern of recent years, appear to have invested wisely after having to sell one of their star players in Jordi Alba but it is hard to see Pellegrino starting with anything other than a defeat.
  • Real are not only one of the most talented teams in the world, they also now have a stability and continuity that so few other teams in La Liga can afford and that is likely to bear fruit in the opening weeks of the season.
  • Look out for Angel Di Maria's contribution in particular. The Argentine started last season in superb form before injuries blighted his last few months of the season, however the 24-year-old signed a new long-term deal at the club last week and celebrated in style with a wonder goal against Germany in midweek.
