Team News

  • Levante will once again have to rebuild without their top-scorer from the previous season after Arouna Kone joined Wigan earlier this week.
  • The Ivorian joins Javi Venta, Gustavo Cabral, Xavi Torres, Ruben Suarez and Valdo as key players from Los Granotes amazing run last season to have left the club over the summer.
  • However, there could be debuts for Nikos Karabelas, Pape Diop, Pedro Rios, Angel and Theofanis Gekas.
  • Atletico have managed to maintain the core of the side that won the Europa League last season with only Alvaro Dominguez leaving for Borussia Monchengladbach, whilst Diego also returned to Germany after his loan deal from Werder Bremen expired.
  • Juanfran is also unlikely to make the trip to Valencia though, as he had to be substituted early in Spain's friendly win over Puerto Rico with a knee problem so there could be a rare start under Diego Simeone for Silvio.
  • Cristian Rodriguez is also expected to make his debut on the left but Emre, Cata Diaz and Raul Garcia are all likely to start on the bench.

Prediction

  • Atletico's failure to qualify for the Champions League last season came due to their poor form on the road, including a crucial 2-0 defeat to Levante in April, but Simeone's men will be confident of starting with three points against a Levante side still coming to terms with the loss of Kone.
  • Keeping hold of Radamel Falcao has been Los Colchoneros' biggest coup over the summer and his partnership with Adrian Lopez flourished under Simeone towards the end of last season as the Colombian scored 36 goals in his debut campaign in the Spanish capital.
  • Diego's departure is also likely to mean a more central role for Arda Turan and after a good if not spectacular first season in Madrid, the Turk could prove to be the key to Atletico's progress this season.
