Team News

  • Celta open the La Liga season on their return to the Primera for the first time in five years.
  • Javi Varas will make his debut in goal after signing on loan from Sevilla, whilst Gustavo Cabral who excelled at Levante towards the end of last season should also make his first start in defence.
  • Iago Aspas was Celta's top-scorer last season with 23 goals and he will again carry the responsibility of scoring the goals needed to keep the Galicians up.
  • Malaga have been the story of Spanish football over the summer as the expected wave of new arrivals didn't come to fruition and instead Santi Cazorla and Salomon Rondon had to be sold just to balance the books.
  • Others, such as Jeremy Toulalan, Isco and Nacho Monreal were also rumoured to be up for sale and if that is the case they may not even be selected this weekend for fear of them getting injured before the transfer window closes.
  • However, Manuel Pellegrini is already very short of options as he only has 16 senior players available to choose from, including just one striker in Seba Fernandez.

Prediction

  • Balaidos is sure to be rocking as Celta begin their campaign back in the top-flight, and if that wasn't enough to spur them on to victory then the problems engulfing Malaga should be sufficient to see them start with a win.
  • Malaga's preparations are further complicated by the fact that they face Panathinaikos in a Champions League qualifier in midweek, a game which could have even more significant financial ramifications for the future of the club, so Pellegrini may also want to ensure that he keeps something in reserve for the visit of the Greeks on Wednesday night.
