Team News

  • Rayo have followed the pattern of having a major turnover in the playing staff over the summer and also have a new coach as Paco Jemez replaced Jose Ramon Sandoval.
  • Top-scorers Michu and Diego Costa have also left as has Raul Tamudo who scored the dramatic last minute winner that kept Rayo up when these two sides last met on the final day of last season.
  • Jemez is expected to name at least four debutants with Ruben, Jordi Amat, Adrian and Danish U-21internationalist Nicki Bille all set to start.
  • Granada have been one of the few Spanish sides to have spent more than they have brought in this summer.
  • Their headline arrival has been Moroccan international Youssef El-Arabi for a fee in the region of €5m, whilst the Andalusians' connection with Udinese continue to bear fruit as Gabriel Torje and Floro Flores have joined on loan.
  • Dani Benitez is suspended until November after he threw a water bottle at a referee towards the end of last season.

Prediction

  • Whilst this clash cannot possibly be as dramatic as their meeting at the end of last season, it will be interesting to see how both sides settle after so many changes in personnel over the summer.
  • Rayo were great to watch last season as they scored and conceded goals for fun, but with Michu and Diego Costa gone they will almost certainly have to tighten up at the back to have any chance of survival this year.
  • Granada also entertained after a difficult opening to last season and, with the likes of El-Arabi and Torje, will certainly have enough creativity to unsettle Rayo.
