Team News

  • Atletico's excellent start to the campaign was somewhat stalled when their match with Real Betis 10 days ago was postponed due to FIFA rules requiring players to be with their national teams four days before qualifying matches.
  • However, Diego Simeone is likely to name largely the same side that demolished Chelsea in their last outing with Cristian Rodriguez coming in for the injured Adrian the only expected change.
  • That should mean another start for the midfield trio of Gabi, Mario Suarez and Koke, although Thiago may come into contention after his strong performance as a sub and wonderful goal in Atleti's last home game against Athletic Bilbao.
  • Rayo, meanwhile, somehow escaped with a point thanks to Sevilla's profligacy in their last outing, but will be without the suspended Ruben Martinez who was sent-off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity in that game.
  • That will mean a rare start for Dani Gimenez in goal, but otherwise Paco Jemez is expected to stick with the 3-5-2 formation that has helped deliver a healthy return of seven points from the first three games.
  • Piti should return after missing the Sevilla game through injury but Chori Dominguez will almost certainly have to wait once more for his first start as a Rayo player.

Prediction

  • Atleti, and Radamel Falcao in particular, have looked ruthless in their last two outings, scoring eight goals with the Colombian bagging a hat-trick in both and it is hard to see them struggling for goals against a side they beat twice last season.
  • Rayo's success with three at the back has been built upon retaining more possession in midfield, but that could prove difficult against Atleti's own combative three in the middle of the park.
  • Should the hosts provide their front three with enough ammunition, they have the potential to cut Rayo to pieces.
