Team News

  • Rayo were beaten for the first time this season at Atletico Madrid last weekend, but their fightback from 4-0 down to 4-3 in the final 10 minutes will have given coach Paco Jemez plenty to consider.
  • Alejandro Dominguez, Andrija Delibasic and Lass Bangoura all made a positive impression from the bench and all three will be in contention to start, although the latter may be seen as a more useful impact substitute.
  • Ruben Martinez should also return in goal after being suspended for the Atleti game and Jemez must also decide whether to continue with the three man defence he has used in recent games against the attacking prowess that the champions possess.
  • Real must start winning if they are to have any hope of retaining their title after a second defeat in four games to Sevilla last weekend saw them fall eight points behind Barcelona.
  • However, they should come into the game on a high having scored twice in the final five minutes to beat Manchester City 3-2 on Tuesday night and Karim Benzema's first goal of the season in that game could be enough to guarantee him a start ahead of the misfiring Gonzalo Higuain.
  • Mesut Ozil should also come back into the side and it will be interesting to see if Sergio Ramos is restored after he was sensationally dropped by Jose Mourinho for the visit of the English champions.

Prediction

  • Real have lost all three of their away games so far this season, but Cristiano Ronaldo's winner on Tuesday night felt like a moment to launch their season and if they take the same intensity into this game as they showed against City then they will have too much quality for Rayo.
  • However, the hosts were far from outclassed when the two sides met at Vallecas last season when Real escaped with a 1-0 win and if they can reproduce a similar performance their more illustrious guests are likely to find their evening on an extremely tight pitch an uncomfortable one.
