  • Real Madrid face an uphill challenge just to overcome the seven-point gap to neighbours Atletico Madrid, let alone the 16-point deficit to Barcelona in 2013.
  • And that gap could get even wider this weekend with Real facing a defensive crisis. Sergio Ramos and Pepe are both suspended, whilst regular left-backs Fabio Coentrao and Marcelo remain out injured.
  • Nacho is therefore likely to be handed another start, whilst Ricardo Carvalho could also return alongside Raphael Varane.
  • Gonzalo Higuain is also fit again and likely to feature at some stage and all eyes will be on Jose Mourinho's decision as to who plays in goal after the Portuguese sensationally dropped Iker Casillas for the defeat to Malaga last time out.
Real Sociedad
  • Real Sociedad are unbeaten in seven league games and moved up to seventh with a 2-1 win over Sevilla before the break.
  • Gorka Elustondo could make his return after more than four months out as Asier Illarramendi is a doubt, but otherwise Philippe Montanier is expected to retain the same starting XI that beat Sevilla, with Diego Ifran retaining his place ahead of Imanol Agirretxe in attack.

Prediction

  • Madrid have been far from secure defensively this season with a much stronger back four on paper than the one they will put out on Sunday and Sociedad have more than enough attacking talent to take advantage of that weakness.
  • Therefore, if the hosts are to start 2013 with a win it would seem like they will have to score multiple times, but that is something that they are more than capable of doing, particularly with the return of Higuain.
