Team News

  • Schalke remain without Höger and Metzelder for the visit of Arsenal, but have no fresh injury concerns.
  • Papadopoulos missed the game at the Emirates through injury but should be back in the starting lineup having been rested for much of the weekend's loss at Hoffenheim.
  • Huntelaar and Afellay scored in that match and will both be playing here, hoping to find the net once again.
  • After being subbed off during the loss at Manchester United with a groin injury, Aaron Ramsey has been ruled out of this tie, so Theo Walcott could return to the starting XI on the right wing. The England winger was ill over the latter part of the weekend, though, and is a doubt.
  • Kieran Gibbs' recovery is going well, and he may be back soon enough, which many Arsenal fans will be happy about with Andre Santos failing to impress in his absence. Farfan had a lot of success over the Brazilian last time out and he could do again if Gibbs doesn't make it back in time.
  • Jack Wilshere has only just returned from injury, and while Arsene Wenger would normally be reluctant to use him only a few days after playing in the league, he is suspended for their next domestic match so he could feature here. Francis Coquelin will play if Wilshere doesn't make it.

Prediction

  • Schalke's fantastic run of form, in which they won five games in a row - including the win at Arsenal - was ended at the weekend as they unexpectedly lost 3-2 at Hoffenheim. That was only their second defeat in all competitions this season, and the 90th minute winner will have taken the wind out of their sails somewhat.
  • Arsenal, meanwhile, have been out of sorts recently, losing to Norwich, Schalke and Manchester United in recent weeks, and while they have also won twice in that time, both wins were unconvincing to say the least.
  • Schalke thoroughly outplayed the Gunners when the sides played in London a fortnight ago, and back in Gelsenkirchen this time around, they will have the home advantage to boot. Arsenal will need to improve vastly if they are to get anything from this game, but with key players still missing, they could struggle again.

  • Giroud definitely isn't the kind of striker Arsenal need. With Walcott's pace & finishing(along with some decent positioning) he should be the striker. Arsenal isn't a team to go for aerial chances, they need a striker who can run after through balls and net them. Cazorla hasn't been his usual self lately, but then again, the team isn't running like it should(partially thanks to Wenger's French player fetish).

Seems like it's going to be another typical year again for Arsenal at best.

  • Giroud is not good enough. Sure, he's good in the air, but that's about it. His instincts are very often wrong, about when and how to pass, about when to shoot. And Theo's decision-making continues to be woeful - not letting Podolski shoot when he's offsides, not laying it off to Giroud to his left at the end. But hey, these players represent the compromises Arsenal makes in the second decade of the 21st century. Limited players with one outstanding quality: Theo with pace and finishing; Giroud with his aerial ability.

  • Make that 1-2.
But certainly Arsenal is a bit underrated. So are all the Bundesliga teams.

  • 2-1 now tho my 2-2 not looking to bad "hopefully"

  • 1-2*

  • Anyone still have something to say about Arsenal's quality? 2-0 up before half time.

  • Arsenal has greater name recognition but Schalke are in much better form and have an equal if not superior squad. Cazorla is very good but I haven't been impressed by any other Arsenal players this year.

  • hahah 2-0 schalke?? is that a joke? Arsenal will win comfortably, 0-2 or 1-3

  • Arsenal really aren't looking good. 2-0 sounds about right

  • Ali T. is mad! Arsenal to lose 2-0???

The Gunners come marching 1 by 1 hurahh hurahh!!!
