Team News
Ireland
Germany
- Martin O'Neil will pick between Shay Given or Darren Randolph for a position between the sticks with Kieron Westwood absent from the squad. Given's experience could give him the advantage for a tie of this magnitude.
- The Ireland manager will also be hoping Seamus Coleman recovers from the injury that kept him out of Everton's 1-1 draw with Liverpool at the weekend, otherwise David Meyler could come in at right-back.
- The loss of Ciaran Clark to injury is a huge blow and Ireland will be desperately hoping Marc Wilson can make the grade in time for the reception of the world champions to partner John O'Shea at the heart of their defence.
- O'Neil could lean towards a more compact 4-4-2 formation, which earned his side a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture earlier in the qualification campaign, which could see Jonathan Walters partner Ireland's leading goal scorer, Robbie Keane, up front.
- The home side will be without James McClean and Glenn Whelan, who are both suspended for this clash. They are likely to be replaced by Wes Hoolahan and Jeff Hendrick, respectively.
- Coleman, James McCarthy, Walters and Wilson are one yellow card away from suspension. Robbie Keane is expected to play despite recently becoming a father again. Wes Hoolahan is also a doubt with a heel injury.
- Joachim Low has named almost an unchanged squad for their final two qualifiers from the side that triumphed in both of their last two matches at the start of last month.
- Bernd Leno's call up in place of Ron-Robert Zieler is the only change. Marco Reus is also back in contention having been forced to withrdraw from the last squad with a toe injury.
- Bastian Schweinsteiger is one yellow card away from suspension.
Germany is done.
It was all a little samey from Germany tonight. Pass, pass, pass and then pass some more. It made it all too easy for Ireland to set their defence up against. The first rule when you have tremendously gifted CM passers is to make the pitch big. Without space, you could have Xavi, Pirlo and Laudrup in the middle and they'd find it hard to penetrate on a regular basis. The lack of a genuine striker is starting to cost Germany now I feel. The false 9 doesn't work for more than a game or 2 and especially against a team who's game-plan from the whistle is defend deep and in numbers. In particular the ball into the 6-yard box from, I believe, Reus which was crying out for a striker to tap it in (the type of goal you can guarantee Lewandowski, Higuain, Benzema etc getting many of a season) flashed straight past without anybody even going for it. The lack of true wingers could also be a problem although I feel it's Reus' lack of form making that problem look more than just a slight weakness.
Seems like Reus, Muller, Gundogan, Gotze etc forgot that they don't have Lewandowski upfront.
Deserved win for Ireland since Germany was not capable of doing anything else except passing the ball around ... No penetration, no dynamics, no creativity and no dribbles. After failing to score on those few chances it was clear that Germany couldn´d get a goal tonight ...
@neumi17- Didn't see this comment before I posted but yeah it was the same idea all night. I'm not a fan of the false 9 at all. It seems to me Loew doesn't know which of his central midfielders to drop so plays them all. This was the same with del Bosque until he abandoned the idea. It's so easy to defend against if that's your primary goal and Ireland were never going to offer space. If Lasogga wasn't hopeless at holding onto the ball, I'd say put him in purely as a big body for opposition CBs to mark. Regarding dribbles, I think in-form Reus & Hermann would provide something different than the death-by-1,000 cuts that is Germany's usual M.O. Reus put in a lovely ball which was asking to be tapped in, yet obviously wasn't. Both are terribly out of form so it looks like a problem position for Germany. However, if those 2, Bellarabi and Schuerrle are all in-form come the Euros, it will suddenly look like a strength.
Seriously proud of the boys in green i really wanted to go to the aviva tonight but i couldnt ah well here to france 2016 :D
@Beastador- Got to beat Poland in Warsaw first which wont be easy. Won 3 and drew the other. Even if Ireland go to the playoffs, I expect them to make it to France though. They seem to me to be a cohesive unit and after 2 good results against the world champions, it would be unfair in the extreme if you didn't get there.
Gundogan is a pure class
Unforfunately germany has no players that are good in dribbling.They pass and pass but can`t beat their opponants ...
@neumi17 They have no striker. Muller is very good, but he is a poacher & fighter, not best technically like Lewandowski or Suarez.
@neumi17 Gundogan, Bellarabi , Gotze ??
@sam09 Gundogan is a central midfielder and doesn`t dribble close to the goal or at the wings. Bellarabi is more fast than technical gifted and Götze didn`t have a single dribble in his last 4 games including today. Plus he is not even good in that ...
Surprise, Reus is playing ... No surprise,he plays awfull as expected
Hoolahan for a couple of minutes plays like Messi every match (with Ireland)
Ok, the official German team: Neuer, Ginter, Boateng, Hummels, Hector, Kroos, Guendogan, Mueller, Oezil, Reus, Goetze. Not too sure of the line-up since Germany do their team in squad number order but there will be a set 2 in midfield and the front 4 will float around as is usual with die Mannschaft. Schweinsteiger missing is a biggie. He suffered an injury in the warm-ups.
0-2 full time result!!
@parvez_308 liar..! :)
smells like 2-2
@koziol.mutant Smells like bullshit
Whoscored predicted a 3-0 thrashing last year, and we all know what happened that match :D
@Beastador- Yeah but tbf Germany suffered severe world cup hangover. Not to mention a couple of centurions retired and Schweinsteiger, who is still the most integral part of Germany's midfield, was missing.
Under 2.5 goals
Klose shoud play, still number 1 german CF.
@Leinad- That says more about the dearth of quality in German number 9s than it does Klose's ability.
@SteveHyland What does " dearth" mean ?
@neumi17- Lack of; shortage of etc. Luckily you have a couple of good players in other positions. Ha. I do think a target man, a Kiessling/Meier type player would work with this German system but Loew isn't keen on Kiessling and Meier at 32 isn't a long-term player. For the Euros though, it may be worth considering, if even to use as a "plan B".
the german lineup: -------------Neuer-------------- Can---Boateng---Hummels---Hector ------Kroos------Schweini------- Müller-------Gündogan-------Özil -------------Götze--------------
Gündogan will play for shure, not Reus who is totally out of form at the moment. 1-3
Ireland 2-3 Germany
Ireland 0-2 Germany . Ireland Will be going into this game looking for a draw but Germany is not that side that does settle for a draw. Germany to win 0-2
Germany will win in both halves
very convincing win for germany
Hoping for a draw against ze Germans. #COYBIG
@Beastador Hoping is allowed ... ;-)
4-1 Germany
Is it only me who at first look thought that Schweinsteiger is playing between Reus and Ozil?
@HassanAshas And yes, it is just you ... ;)
@HassanAshas Reus won`t play
@HassanAshas With his last name being that long, the possibilities are endless. Truly versatile player.
I hope this is the platform for Marco Reus to shine back and perform again more than last season. Reus in overrated player right now...
@alfmz He won`t shine since he won`t play ...
A very physical 2-0 German win.
