- Steve Bruce has a number of injury concerns in defence for the welcome of Newcastle, with Liam Rosenior, Alex Bruce and James Chester all sidelined, though Andrew Robertson is available again
- Robert Snodgrass and Mohamed Diame will also both miss out, while Robbie Brady will be assessed closer to kick off. Nikica Jelavic and Abel Hernandez both partook in training this week and one could start in attack.
- Gaston Ramirez could come back into the side.
- Newcastle's injury problems is beginning to ease, though John Carver is without Siem de Jong, Gabriel Obertan, Rolando Aarons, Steven Taylor and Jak Alnwick for the trip to the KC Stadium.
- Paul Dummett is a doubt, but is expected to start at left-back, with Mike Williamson likely to partner Fabricio Coloccini at the heart of the backline.
- Papiss Demba Cisse and Cheick Tiote are both unavailable due to their Africa Cup of Nations participation, though Cisse could be available after the weekend.
