Team News

Italy
Ireland
  • Antonio Conte has already confirmed he will be making a number of changes after already securing top spot in Group E inside two matches.
  • Eder, Daniele De Rossi, Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, Gianluigi Buffon and Tiago Motta are all a booking away from a suspension, though Bonucci and Motta are in line to start.
  • Federico Bernardeschi and Stephan El Shaarawy are battling for a place on the right.
  • Antonio Candreva picked up a hamstring injury against Sweden and will not be risked here.
  • Jonathan Walters missed the 3-0 defeat against Belgium with a heel problem and he remains a huge doubt for Ireland's must win match against Italy on Wednesday.
  • Martin O'Neil will reportedly axe three of the back four that started against Belgium with Seamus Coleman set to be the only survivor. Shane Duffy and Richard Keogh could replace Ciaran Clark and John O'Shea at the heart of the defence, while Robbie Brady will return to left-back.
  • Shane Long could also be dropped in favour of Daryl Murphy and then be brought off the bench as an impact sub later on in the game. James McCarthy could be replaced by Stephen Quinn as another change.
  • Ireland cannot afford to be too conservative in this match as they have done in the first two matches as they need to win to have any chance of progressing out of the group.

Prediction

  • Italy have already qualified from the group in first place and will make wholesale changes to the side that will face Ireland. There will be chances for some of the fringe players in the squad to stake a claim for future matches in the next phase of the tournament.
  • Ireland were very poor against Belgium last time out and could live to rue not putting the Sweden game to bed. The 1-1 draw in their group opener means they have to win here and even that may not be enough to qualify due to their goal difference.
  • Ireland have a decent recent record against Italy. They've only lost once in their last five meetings with the Italians and have kept a clean sheet in two of their last three against Wednesday's opponents. Italy have their tails up at the moment and even with a weakened team Ireland may have left it too late to get the result they need to get out the group stages for the first time in their history.

  • wrote below it must be France-Ireland :) Italy helped this to happen.

  • OMG! What a crap! Each round these cheaters progress equals one more nail in the coffin of decent football. My compassion goes to all Chelsea fans who will have to bear similar crap for at least one season.

  • @BeautifulLoser I agree with you. And this is not 3-5-2 this is 8-2-0 formation. Not far from Italy in 2014 world cup.

  • @sampo It is depressing to watch that.

  • @BeautifulLoser kosher Roman won't allow crap to happen, will be some funny ht 1/ft 2 and other drama :)

  • no Hoolahan :( hope he enters later on

  • @koziol.mutant Totally agree, loved the man for Norwich this season too. Always a joy to watch!

  • @Castle needed him to my fantasy team :P

  • @koziol.mutant Good insight. Congrats about that!

  • @Castle got assist :)

  • back ht italia

  • This match would end up 1-0 or 1-1

  • Italy likely to change their starting 11 and rest some key players. I haven't seen much from Ireland yet, but they might suprise us today. I'm going for a draw. 1-1. Also.. as huatla9 says, Italy might wanna lose to avoid Spain in the next round. I can smell an upset.. but maybe that's just me :D

  • @dynek called it^^

  • @dynek italy are 1st no matter what

  • @haemorrhage oh yeah, u are right ^^

  • If italy top of the group.they will facing spain.if they beat spain then england, france and germany also waiting in this table. If italy 2nd place this group, they will facing more easy oponent untill final.

  • @huatla9 Italy will certainly be 1ste in this group. Even with both Belgium and Italy having 6 points, Belgium was defeated by Italy so Italy will be first ;) So unless Ireland wins and Belgium will be defeated with more than 3 goals difference, 2nd place in the group will be for Belgium ;)

  • Ireland - France to come so Ireland win here. 2-1.
