Team News

Ireland
Sweden
  • Jonathan Walters, Robbie Brady and Robbie Keane are the only injury doubts ahead of their group opener against Sweden but they all reported to training on Thursday.
  • James McCarthy was an injury doubt at the start of June but has recovered in time for the clash against Sweden.
  • Sweden have a clean bill of health ahead of this clash and will need to keep Zlatan Ibrahimovic fit to have any chances of progressing out of the group.

Prediction

  • Ireland failed to win any of two three warm-up matches, which concluded with a 2-1 defeat to Belarus. Preperations have been far from ideal and they will need to get a positive result from this match to have any real chance of progressing out of the group.
  • The same is true for Sweden. This game will have been earmarked as a must win for both teams. Sweden recorded one win from two friendlies but that was a comprehensive 3-0 win over Wales last time out. Zlatan Ibrahimovic needs to fire for the Swede's to get through, especially against the Irish.
  • Sweden have won five of the nine meetings between these two nations and triumphed the last time these two sides met, which was a 2-1 win in 2013. A repeat scoreline is on the cards.

  • Why Brady rating is so low? He was one of the best, alongside Hoolahan and Hendrick

  • Ibrahimovic deserves more.

  • What a bullet from Clark.

  • Whoscored is on point 2:1 win for sweden. Zlatan motm

  • I think this will be a draw. Tough game to predict really. The x factor of Shane Long is a big one. In red hot form he is a real difficult player to handle with his pace and physicality (very strong player with a big spring despite his size). And then there is the x factor of Ibrahimovic..

  • I keep having issues commenting. It keeps glitching and won't let me comment very often? Anyone else experiencing this? It's impossible for me to comment on an in play game? Anyone know why? It's a shame as traditionally whoscored is full of comments during games and not so much before or after matches. I made a new account as I thought there was a glitch on my account, but I've been posting here for like 4 years or something

  • @Tactical Yes, I regularly get the same problem. Either the site keeps telling me to log in when I have, or you get an Error message when you try to post a reply to another comment. I've had this problem for a long time.

  • @What4 I think it's possibly been sorted out now. I hope so anyway

  • I want to go for a draw, because Sweden are overrated, but man, Ireland are rubbish. Coleman and Long are the only ones with any sort of talent.

  • @What4 This is not Northern Ireland. It's the Republic of Ireland, which is stronger. It played the qualifiers in the group of Germany, Poland and Scotland and only lost 2 matches. Got a 1-1 draw in Germany and won 1-0 at home. Lost 2-1 against Poland and tied 1-1 at home. So it got the 3rd place and played playoff matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina where tied the 1st leg away from home and won at home. So it's not that weak as you think it is :)

  • @hellreaper No, they are exactly as weak as I think. Qualifiers only tell you so much.

  • @What4 how would that save ireland out of the group? Are belgium and Italy any easier?

  • GROUP E IS THE GROUP OF DEATH AND WHICHEVER TEAMS QUALIFIES FROM THIS WILL SURELY GO THE DISTANCE AND MIGHT EVEN WIN. Come on you swedes this the best chance to win euros.

  • sweden wins 0-1

  • DRAW

  • Ireland surely won't lose here. Sweden very overrated with poor defence and unsettled midfield. Ireland to get help to avenge 'hand of Henry" in France :) Ireland 2-1

  • With Zlantan on the field it's gonna be hard for Ireland but if they can take their chances.. Don't really know what to predict here.

  • 1:2 Sweden

  • 1-0 to Irland
