cont... Hughes was impressive for us, his close control looked typical un-English but he was hardly ever on the ball in the 2nd half. He got cramp from CHASING the ball, how ridiculous is that? We had 2 days extra recuperation time to prepare for this game but we made it so that we were doing the chasing. Given it is so much easier to play with the ball than without, our 2 days extra rest was negated by the 80 minute mark and we hung on in extra time. It would've been a travesty had we gone through on penalties after the previous hour was spent attempting to park the bus. Arnold made some nice passes although he has to stop shooting when there are better options. Toljan played very well and should've had at least 1 assist but Philipp is a disgusting player who not only delivered a couple of elbows (Red card offences in themselves) but decided to go down like a sack of the proverbial whenever he was tackled. Disappointed not to see Dahoud but a couple of these could make the grade.
@SteveHyland I wonder why England wasn't more dominante? The have a few really good footballer in the team with very good ball control, probably more than Germany. Why did they decide to stopp attacking. Each time they did we were in danger...
@neumi17- It's what we were all saying in my house. I don't think we would've been close had every U21 eligible player been available but given the 2 teams, we should've faired better in the general play.
Congrats to Germany. We started brightly, had a couple of great chances early on, one of which definitely has to go in at this level. The 'penalty' claim wasn't, it was accidental but FIFA have yet to bring in rules for accidental actions which impede a player in the box. You either get a wrong call (penalty) or you have the opposition team annoyed because they were dealt with unfairly- which in this instance Germany were. Not sure why Bothroyd thought that sitting back whenever we were level or ahead was a good idea. I don't mind setting up to counter but setting up to just defend is stupid against a team as good at passing the ball as Germany. All in all, I can't argue with the result. I look forward to a time when we have a manager who doesn't automatically refer to championship football tactics against teams better than us with the ball- especially at this stage in a players development.......tbc
@Ffaris- How about the 2 clear goal scoring opportunities (and one half chance) for England in the first 7 minutes? Germany were the better side over the full 120 minutes but let's not pretend this was a case of one team being so much better than the other from minute 1 which owed nothing to tactics. We clearly sat back for large portions of the game INTENTIONALLY. Most of those German shots were speculative efforts too. Germany had big misses at 2-2 which would've won it for them but they could very well have been 3-0 down, and should've been at least 1-2 at HT. You can never say what would've happened but missed England chances then conservative tactics at 1-1 and 2-1 allowed Germany to build up momentum and you cannot do that with good technical teams. In the end, the result was what I expected had somebody told me this was the gameplan.
@SteveHyland I am not too shure about intention part. England started like crazy and was the better team in the first 15-20 minutes. They had 60 % possession after the first half... But after about 65 min they just stopped playing completely. If this was intentional it would have been really stupid because Germany had chance after chance. In my eyes England just ran out of steam and was unable to keep up. I wasn't too impressed with the german team either. Very little flexibility in the way we tried to attack. No combinations or creative attempts just slow build up and than flanks, flanks, flanks...
I think Germany played much better and more exiciting before Kuntz took over. Its boring to watch...
@neumi17- Exactly my point, it was a stupid tactic but Bothroyd is known for this. It is indicative of the English ethos that a lower-tier championship level manager is taking charge of an important developmental age national team. All the advantages we should've had in the game were negated by a manager who doesn't have a clue.
I do think whatever England is suffering from right now. Has something to with "Karma" for the English language speaker. In fact a concept a very similar to Karma is in Islam. Forgot what it is called. The Greek had a very specific word for Karma that most applicable to England. That is called Nemesis. England has suffering all this humilation all this time due to a simple fact. World Cup 1966. No I'm not talking about Germany vs England final where Geoff Hurst magical goal was allowed. The entire wc was sham. The quaterfinals with Argentina one such FINE EXAMPLE. The rest of the teams were not allowed to have proper pitch. Pele complained of grass length and had to waste their day find another suitable pitch. Argentina were given training ground no goal post, that they had to waste their time in bringing a local carpenter. Every country had 2 photographer whereas Engalnd had 14. This photographer controversy resulted in international humiliation for English Ambassador to brazil.
The Argentinan Team that faced England QF were dropped off a place that 80 minutes away from the pitch. Magically the umpire gave offside to Argentian goal. Kreitlein(German) send off Rattin not for foul but how he according Kretilein: "that he didn't liked the face of urugyans." Heck even even Sunday times weren't impressed with Kreitlein performance either. Eusebio found England vs Argentina qf as: "The referee always seemed to see only the worst faults of the Argentina players. He could not see the faults of the England players."
The Uruguans complained about the match referring as biased. In fact when they gave autograph to local English kid. Instead of writing their names they did something cheeky. Wrote a message in English. Called 66 tourney a fraud. Pele categorically(Although I'm not fan of this guy and hate him by his guts) stated that entire world cup referring was biased toward england. Jao Havelange one longest regining FIFA PRESIDENT called 66 wc as fixed by referees.
. And In finals against germany the allowed goal of Geofhurst by Soviet-Azerbaijani Bakhramov. It is an interesting story. When he asked in his death bed whether the ball crossed the line. He had only one word to say "STALINGRAD" In which an event in which 75,000 soviet died.

The players that could make it to the A team in the next years would be Weiser, Gnabry, Dahoud and maybe Stark and Toljan. The rest is either too slow ( Meyer), technically too limited ( Selke) or generally just of mediocre quality. Most of those guys are quite good but not really good.
@neumi17 Agree. But definitely Meyer is talented, maybe he is having the same Draxler problem a change of scenario would do him good. And Tolijan? What? I think are better rb than Tolijan. Even that Stuttgart rb is better than him. Forgot what his name was. Surely if Lukas Klosterman(rasenball leipzig) wasn't injured he was definitely alot better Tolijan.
@Ffaris Toljan is a really good footballer technically. All the other options are mostly only good defensively, in running or other areas but in terms of offensive power, dribbling and ball control Toljan is one of the best. And Meyer is not good enough to make it really up there in my opinion. Too slow, no penetration power, no real playmaker, scorer or dribbler. Just a good footballer...
The bookies in the UK have a 1-goal German win as the most likely result apart from 1-1. Bookies tend to to be circumspect when it comes to knockout games but I can't argue with a 2-1 Germany win. Both teams have eligible players missing and I don't see many of either squad being regulars in their respective full national team in 3-5 years time. I would say 3 will be in and around the 2020 Euro squad from THIS England U21 squad barring injuries (Pickford, Holding and Ward-Prowse) but it's unlikely any of the Chelsea players will be unless they seek a move to another club before their developmental stage is ruined. Germany would've won this tournament at a canter if not for the Confed cup taking a number of eligible players away. You'd expect Gnabry will be in the 2018 WC squad barring injury, he is going to be loaned out to a team where he will play regularly (Bremen?) and was excellent on occasion last season. Anyways, 2-1 Germany here as I said previously, possibly AET though.

37 shots by Germany DOMINATION. Lucky Ingi. You came this far. Amiri and Philip with BIG MISSES.

@neumi17 * I meant crosses, crosses, crosses... A little bit of germanenglish ;-))
England to qualify
@footballover now you have lost a lot money now do ya ;)
Shame this doesn't have stats. Surely this game is worthy of stats considering some of the leagues they are doing stats for?
In the words of great man by the name of Daniel Bryan: "YES!" David Selke.
