Dortmund will win today, they will end their loosing streak today and... they have a new head coach also so... but wait a second... NO! Borussia Dortmund is still very bad at defence, Their current form and last results are humilating for them and their injury list is longer then distance from the Earth to the Sun. Marco Reus ??? Wtf with him ? He played more matches on FIFA 18 then for club on the real pitch this year. He will spend rest of his life in hospice then. (as Bale for example) I don't really expect Dortmund will win today, Tip for the tipsters Mainz 1X 1/10 and Mainz AH + 1,5 9/10
Interesting decision to employ Peter Stoeger as Bosz's replacement. Chalk replacing cheese. Dortmund will be considerably better defensively, this is almost guaranteed. Stoeger is a defence-first tactician and a fairly circumspect character in general. It may not be imminent, but certainly after the winter break I expect to see a sturdy Dortmund defensive unit which involves the CMs protecting (presumably) the back 4. The biggest issue for me is whether he can marry a new-found solidity with the type of dominating, free-flowing attack which the Westfalenstadion faithful have bared witness to for 8 or so years. It isn't impossible and with BVB's talent, he doesn't need to be as cautious as he was with Cologne but there is a saying about leopards and spots. The one thing I couldn't call his Cologne side is "aesthetically pleasing". He at least tried to dominate lesser opponents, I suppose- silver linings and all that. I wonder what Dortmund fans think? Not the obvious choice....
@SteveHyland Not really. You must've been used to Peter Stoger tenure at Fc Koln where he did indeed played defensive and football. As Fc Koln yo-yo and a struggling of bundesliga.
But his years in Austrian Bundesliga famous for attacking football especially Austria Wien where they had beaten Redbull Salzburg for the title. In fact Peter Stoger even bemoaned about Redbull Salzburg defensive and cautious approach. Do remeber that Redbull Salzburg gegenpressing revolution only started in 2012 under Roger Schmidt and Ragnick. So yeah it's unbelievable but Stoger back then actually criticised Redbull for the defensive football.
If I have to compare Stoger it would be Otto Rehaggel. A coach whose Werder Bremen was famous was for scoring and conceding lot of goals. But when great Otto took Greece he made the made impossible possible with cautious and negative football that he became associated with his later tenure.
Though I would applaud you on your sensible analysis.
@Ffaris- That is the hope, that the Dortmund attacking quality prevents Stoeger from reverting to defensive type. He did try to dominate and attack lesser teams while Cologne coach so I'm clinging on to that. The most recent style is usually the one a manager falls back on and I look at his appointment and see it as a knee-jerk reaction to Dortmund's defensive failings under Bosz as though Watzke WANTS Stoeger's stock Cologne tactics to be implemented.
With peter bosz finally sacked, Dortmund are expected to play their free flowing football again but it remains to be seen if they can resolve their defensive issues at this stage
