- Mesut Ozil has returned to training but Joachim Low refused to confirm a starting berth for the Arsenal ace.
- Marco Reus and Julian Draxler may benefit with starts if Ozil is not deemed fit enough to start for Germany.
- Manuel Neuer is expected to start in goal for the reigning world champions despite missing most of last season through injury.
- Javier Hernandez didn't start either of Mexico's warm-up games, suggesting he will have to settle for a place on the bench here.
I need to clarify my first comment about playing 3 center defenders. Germany could have started Sule or Rudiger in place of Hector at left fullback without asking Sule and Rudiger to move upfield on attacks. Attacks can succeed without a left fullback going far upfield. Nacho covers for missing center defenders and fullbacks at Real Madrid. Real Madrid succeeds with Nacho at fullback without asking Nacho to match the attacking play of Marcelo or Carvajal. Germany would have had three defenders back to challenge 3-man quick attacks by Mexico with this lineup.
Hector Herrera MOTM for me.
I will add I did not watch the Germany-Mexico match. The media report Germany to play in a 4-2-3-1. A 4-2-3-1 is a flawed formation in my view so I don't watch teams that play it. I have seen teams succeed defensively in this formation when the two trailing midfielders defend assiduously but these teams scored too rarely. I suspect with five midfielders on the field the midfielders realize there is rarely need for all of them to be back on defense so designating two to fill this role works better. The attacking midfielder and forward positions in a 4-2-3-1 appear to be designed for pressing not attacking. The forward is in the way of a shot by the center attacking midfielder. That midfielder has an awkward pass to the forward. The side attacking midfielders are outside of the goal scoring area and have a long pass to the forward. Fitting 2 frequent goal scorers into a 4-2-3-1 can be difficult, unlike a 4-4-2.
Playing three center defenders is not the only alternative formation for Germany. The lineup against Mexico fits a 4-4-2. Ozil challenging Lozano before Mexico scored looks like a right midfielder in a 4-4-2 covering for Kimmich's absence upfield. Having Muller and Werner play two forwards would give Kimmich two targets for a cross both facing a single center defender possibly. Redirecting a cross to the other forward is an additional option for scoring off a cross with two forwards.
Neuer reportedly claims Germany's choice of formation and players were not the problem in the loss to Mexico. Germany did not play, nor select, a genuine defensive midfielder, as far as I can tell. With no defensive midfielder in the lineup playing three center defenders would make sense to me. I have often seen teams in a 4-2-3-1 concede attacks like the ones Mexico succeeded in making against Germany.
Kroos shot on post too. Ozil and Khedira are in mind at there President and bit on the field
This was a pathetic game to watch. How many 2-on-1 or even 3-on-1 ended up with a poorly executed pass for Mexico?! Good job by their midfield to put pressure on the Germans, but otherwise not a good spectacle compared to the Spain-Portugal game. It's not the first time the Germans have struggled to finish scoring chances in tournaments, so I expect they will bounce back. Look at the heat map though, and how predictable the play on the right side of the field is - as was the case last time. Having Sane on the left would have made the threat less predictable. And I hope Reus will be on the starting lineup next game.
@antonsmith nah, mexico defeating the world cup champions was waaaaaay more entertaining than portugal v spain, at the end of the day this result is the most impactful and shocking of all. The rest are fixable draws, your not giving the mexicans the credit they deserve, their defending was great, their pressure was great, their passing, their counter attacking ALL great, the only thing to fault them for was not scoring their chances really.
@antonsmith You may be right, be Sane has struggled badly for Germany.
@antonsmith I hope Brandt
Good job,Mexico.
Belgium are real dark horse now
Draxler is more 4.7 than 7.7, awful decision making
Oh God facing Brazil who is arguably the best team is a scary prospect. We're going to end up facing brazil. That's is scary. The world cup is Brazil to take. Germany looks like a mess. Spain has been disoriented thanks to last-minute Lopetgui firing. Argentina has a great coach and players but they're only 11 games into Saompoli tenure. So Argentina is in an extremely bad mess. France is France there are reports of internal strife. Also whoever wins the Confed Cup never have won the world cup which is germany. Brazil has a lot going in their favor. Rai was in PSG during 94 World cup. Ronaldinho was in PSG during 2002 world cup and Neymar is in PSG during this world cup. God save. I hope Germany or Argentia wins this world cup it's for Brazil to take. Everything is going in their favor.
@Ffaris Don't worry Spain or Portugal are gonna take it. Spain were way better than Portugal. And Portugal have Ronaldo to win them WC. Argentina aren't going to take it because of their funny overdribbling midget.
@yash8117 England are dark horses still, as are Belgium and Colombia.
Do not trust anyone !!!
Lol calm down guys, Germany is not shit. They lost ok, they were harmless the first half - ok, Loew trust Muller too much, i believe he is over, he does literally nothing, Reus and Brandt changed the game just for couple of minutes. Germany were outplayed tactically this match and i hope Loew realise that without Reus, Germany lack the creativity. Gundogan must replace Khedira, Khedira was bad, probably the worst player after Muller. They are lucky that they are in group with Sweden and Korea and this lose is not the end, but they should focus and concentrate, Werder did nothing as well, its hard at this stage, only the best players deliver. Germany had literally the same match vs Ghana last WC, but they had luck back then and finished 2-2, now they were unlucky not to score once.
@koevasd123 Sorry but at the moment Germany ist s....t ! For 2 years now the play slow and boring football without any quick movements, surprising combinations or any ideas in general. And no, that's not a single bad game of Germany today, they have been playing like this for months and years now. Özil, Müller and Werner don't play creative and quick enough...
@koevasd123 Germany were atrocious. It would have been hilarious to see Germany try this tactical plan against Portugal with Ronaldo or England with Kane and Vardy up front. They would get obliterated on the counter attack. The problem for Germany is their only really proven scorer is Muller, especially in tournament football. Hence being very scared to drop him. Germany's shoot on sight tactic was embarrassing to watch to be honest, they kept constantly shooting on their weaker sides.
Mexico deserved to win and most importantly, Germany deserved to lose. Either this serves as a wake-up call and we see a German team who play the sum of their parts or we'll see a tournament group stage as ignominious as Euro 2000.
this is what real madrid used to look like when carlo put kroos as the DM.. huge mistake. mexico should have scored at list 3 if not more, hummels, boateng, kroos and sami are SLOW, i am surprise low went for this 4 in such a key position where one mistakes cost the game.
The play acting from Germany and complaining to the ref was embarrassing to watch. They looked like spoilt children. They didn't shake hands with Mexico and congratulate them at the end either. Extremely unsporting and incredible how bad they are at losing. They need to be more gracious in defeat and show the referee more respect. The referee gave Germany a lot more than they should have got throughout the match and Mexico didn't really bother complaining to the ref at all.
@Champion lmao you obviously mean mexico not germany. So pathetic to see all the mexican flopping and whining and petty stalling of game. So glad the ref gave out a yellow for that stalling, so deserved and frankly pathetic that a team that's winning cant have an ounce of class. Also germany was absolutely shaking hands at the end, what reality are you living in hahaha
@HollandFan1 Germany constantly crying for fouls and penalties. Germany didn't shake hands at the end not once on tv. Ref gave Mexico nothing all game. You are mad you lost your bet.
@Champion Super obvious that you are just bitter and hope Germany does badly. Everyone can see that. Everyone but you clearly saw Germans shaking hands at the end. And I don't bet on group stage games, get a life lad
@HollandFan1 I think you are bitter Germany lost kiddo
@Champion absolutely agree. Hummels should've been sent off.
The best team won
you should thanks me a lot on my 100% predictions
@martinkamenarski I had a bet on 0-1 to Mexico. I'm still pissed Mexico didn't score 3 or 4 to be honest just to see the look on the face of Germany's players
@martinkamenarski- Where are our girls?!?!?!?!
The worst Germany since 2002 or even '98
@neumi17 Lucky to only lose by 1 goal. Goal difference could have been damaged badly.
How is it unfair Neuer who did not play for a very long time to come from injury and replace Stegen. Very bad move from such an experienced coach
@bitbot02 It should be a Neuer error. Neuer beaten at the near post and he got to the ball. He could have saved it.
Seriously Germany has yet to arrive at the world cup. They really need to do something about that midfield
@Riah They need an anchor midfielder with a mindset like Kante, otherwise they are going to be so open through the tournament unless they revert to a back three
Reus and Goretzka on for Ozil and Muller or Draxler
@JoeSWFC Won't happen at half time. Ozil is unlikely to come off, he is involved in quite a lot of goals for them. Muller also has a good goal scoring record for Germany. Neither are likely to come off any time soon.
@JoeSWFC Keep Muller Goretzka should come for Khedira. He's been unbelievably bad.
Embarrassing defending from Germany. Boateng a 3/10 and Hummels a 4 so far. Kimmich has also neglected his running-back duties on at least two occasions. Plattenhardt has been ok yet has the lowest rating above. Khedira is offering no cover either. An all-round shambles thus far and I'm being polite. Mexico should be 3-0. Up front, there is no movement so Oezil may as well not be on the pitch.
Khedira is playing for Mexico. worst player ever
Reus and Goretzka or Gundogan should be brought on for Khedira and Ozil or Draxler.
Didnt kroos hit the bar with that freekick
@Sinaj no the keeper actually saved it, he pushed it onto the bar
@Sinaj It go tipped onto the bar by Ochoa. The shot counts as on target and as a save from Ochoa.
Kimmich side is being attacked everytime Mexico decides
mexico is amazing , and lozano is very very good player
ozil having no effect on the game as usual...
@kunoy He's a key player for Germany. His career stats speak for themselves. He also has the most Premier League assists for an individual player since his arrival. I think you are expecting too much from one player.
@Champion he is pure sh*t in last 2 seasons. bye
@stefanm He's annoying to watch at times, but I suggest you look at his stats. There wasn't really any space for a playmaker in this game that likes to play in the positions Ozil does, Germany could have taken Ozil off at half time for a centre forward.
Mexico are all over Germany like a rash on the counter attack. Germany have been very naive tactically and have been out-thought by Mexico and Osorio
Well deserved goal for Mexico...what a great match so far.
Germany as expected, slow, imobile, poor ball control and a static build up. On top of it their defence is extremely shaky ...
@neumi17 It isn't a good idea to have two big slow lumps in defence that have zero mobility. At least one should have more pace in an expansive style. Spain showed that too as Portugal shredded them on the break due to Pique being a snail. Germany look better since conceding
why was Kroos not booked for squaring up to and pushing into the ref?
Timo Werner will score.He has scored 8 goals in 14 games.
Mexico will not be able to handle Germanys physically strong approach especially at free kicks and corners.The Germans have a good aerial strength compared to Mexicos height.
@nexus747 Person with height fetish detected. Even sides with a huge physical dominance over another rarely take advantage of it even on set pieces. It's football not basketball
Mexico wins 2-0.

Lozano to score for Mexico? Why not.
Germany 3-0.They play well in tournaments rather than friendlies.
@nexus747 lol
3:1
2:1
1:1 / Kimmich Hernandez
germany win
Giving the fact that Germany always starts slow i will go for hard fought 2-1 win. Mexico is great tournament team.
@koevasd123 Yes, 4-0 wins over Australia and Portugal in the last 2 world cups were very slow starts.
@Tomko Oh and Germany was better than what it is now and Portugal was way weaker than what it has become in the last years and yet they could have beated Germany. What happened was the red card + penalty in the beginning of the match putting them to play down to 10 and losing for the whole match. So it will probably be balanced against Mexico
@Tomko But this time they will face Mexico and it will be hard. Maybe 2-1 win for Germany or draw
Germany have been laughably bad in their last 4 friendly games but that is Germany for ya. I fully expect them to be up for this game though and Mexico's inclination to play football could benefit the German attack. There are a few issues in the German team- lack of a genuine #9 who you feel confident about, no replacement for Oezil (he is expect to miss out and Reus in the #10 would be terrible imo) and an up-and-down Julian Draxler but their midfield should control the game and their defence can't be as bad as they were against the Saudis. I am going with 2-0.
Mexico +1.5 if u want to win money for a car and X2 if you want find some girls after the match.
X2 2.95 won ;)
Germany wins and under 3,5.
@Davisson By 'under 3.5', you mean 'max 3'?
Over 2,5 goals.
What number is Khedira
@tristankleyn 6
@hidayatridwan thanks
Germany win +1 1-0 2-1 3-2 4-3
germany smash mexico like hulk smash little man
@RemyLebeu Mexico is a good side, no one is going to be smashed.
@hellreaper yeah they are good side... like Brasil on last world cup
@Cpfc1905 Brazil was a bad side on last word cup and I've spotted it since the first matches.
