Team News

Chelsea
Arsenal
  • Ross Barkley will have to wait to make his Chelsea debut as he continues to recover from a serious hamstring injury that has kept him sidelined all season.
  • Antonio Conte otherwise have a clean bill of health ahead of the first leg of their League Cup semi final with Arsenal and is expected to name a similar XI to the one that started last week's 2-2 draw with the Gunners.
  • Tiemoué Bakayoko was poor at the Emirates and Conte may think about changing him for Danny Drinkwater here, but Alvaro Morata is expected to keep his place up front despite a horror evening in front of goal in that match.
  • Arsene Wenger is poised to rest Petr Cech after promising David Ospina playing time in the cups this season.
  • Alexis Sanchez is expected to start despite being heavily linked with a move to Manchester City, but a knee injury may keep out Mesut Ozil.
  • Danny Welbeck will expect to start in Ozil's absence following Alex Iwobi's recent antics away from football.
  • Granit Xhaka and Shkodran Mustafi will both need late fitness tests before a decision is made on their involvement.
  • Sead Kolasinac, Olivier Giroud, Aaron Ramsey, Nacho Monreal and Laurent Koscielny won't feature until at least the weekend.

Prediction

  • Chelsea will look to take advantage of home advantage in the first leg and seize the initiative in this League Cup semi final. The Blues haven't beaten Arsenal in their last four encounters but haven't lost at home to the Gunners since October 2011.
  • Arsene Wenger has only lost more games against Manchester United (26) than he has versus Chelsea (19) in his career and Arsenal are the underdogs in this semi final tie. Arsenal have struggled for consistency on their travels this season, winning just three of 12 domestic away matches thus far. They were also eliminated from the FA Cup third round by Championship strugglers Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
  • Arsenal played well in patches in the 2-2 draw at home to Chelsea last week, but should really had lost that match after Alvaro Morata spurned three great goalscoring chances. A trip to Stamford Bridge is always difficult and the objective for Arsenal will be to ensure they are still in the contest when they take the game back to the Emirates.

  • VAR is finally here. Long overdue.

  • Chelsea fans will feel disappointed and I must admit I didn't like our (Arsenal's) ultra-conservative performance in the 2nd half but 0-0 first leg result in any competition is a good result. Welbeck and Iwobi put a huge shift in and the defence was well organised for the most part. Hopefully Wilshire's injury isn't major. Impact injuries as a result of the ball being hit at you tend to hurt a lot, swell and bruise but usually don't result in a long layoff. We shall see.

  • Costa was a beast in the final third , conte will remain happy with baby morata who does nothing but complaining . Credit to Arsenal , they fielded a weaker side , still managed a point

  • @footballover There's no such thing as getting "a point" in cup competitions.

  • @uefalona , I know that . Technically you are right but you know what I tried to say. If you have said Arsene Wenger, the match would end up in a draw in Stamford Bridge , he would have accepted that

  • What a disappointing match, Wenger will be the happier manager, good chance for Arsenal now in the 2nd leg at the Emirates.

  • 1st comment here I made 2 days ago I said under 2.5 and a draw arsenal will settle for a draw people didn't believe saying arsenal cant play defensively people like uefalona well I don't need to say much more let the final scoreline do the talking.

  • @RemyLebeu You was right

  • @RemyLebeu I asked why you thought that or if you were trolling. I never said I didn't believe. If the match finished 2-2, would you have been so quick to boast in here?

  • what does Morata do on the pitch?

  • @kunoy , complaining

  • @kunoy its the main reason he was sold from madrid. many of his goals were vs the bottom teams in the league and some of them belong in 2nd division

  • Draw 0:0

  • With a very strong side, Chelsea are playing crap

  • Arsenal win or draw

  • Arsenal without key players. Decent odds for Chelsea.

  • 1X

  • 2 - 0 Chelsea vs arsenal

  • Wenger OUT !!

  • Chelsea vs Arsenal over 3.5 goals

  • Chelsea win

  • Chelsea win. Congrats.

  • Chelsea won't lose 10u on chelsea

  • In my humble opinion i think Chelsea can overcome Arsenal and qualify to the finals to play Man City

  • 3-1 coz Arsenal lost a lot of players

  • 1-1 (morata/alexis)

  • Historically Arsenal have a knack of bouncing back after a bad result. They very rarely lose twice in a row.

  • @MEHJones true... an odd stat, every 10 - 11th game between the two has seen over 4 goals... Just a thought!

  • arsenal will try to settle for a draw so you will see a defensive display by arsenal with under 2.5 goals and a draw.

  • @RemyLebeu Why do you think this? Or are you simply trolling?

  • @RemyLebeu I doubt Arsenal can play defensively.

  • @RemyLebeu Arsenal can play defensive

  • @Cannavaro69 Can't*
