- Rodrigo Bentancur is one booking away from suspension.
- Oscar Tabarez could ring the changes from the side that beat Russia 3-0.
- Jose Gimenez is set to recover from injury in time to start, while Diego Laxalt and Lucas Torreira are expected to retain their starting spots.
- Fernando Santos could bring Joao Moutinho back into the side at Adrien Silva's expense in the middle of the park, though he is sweating on the fitness of William Carvalho.
- Ricardo Quaresma and Andre Silva may also keep their spots in the XI with Bernardo Silva and Goncalo Guedes force to settle for a spot on the bench.
- Adrien Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Cedric Soares, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Quaresma and Raphael Guerreiro are all one booking away from a ban.
WHAT AN AMAZING DAY. BOTH MESSI AND RONALDO GONE AND HOPEFULLY ALL THE FANBOYS WITH THEM.
Cavani's second finish was beautiful. He was excellent all game as were Suarez, Godin, Laxalt and Torreira. Not the best watch of the tournament by any means and Portugal can feel aggrieved, but Uruguay's 2 goals were moments of class and their pragmatism will make it difficult for France to break down. There are too many players in the Portugal team who should be nowhere near international football. 6 or 7 of the 14 who played some part today. We will see none of those at Euro 2020.
@SteveHyland To be honest this defeat has a lot to do with his choice for the RB position, I mean...Why Ricardo Pereira suddenly? Uruguay's goals were great, but they came from his side, and in the 2nd goal ffs...he left Cavani alone. Cedric should have played, I also don't understand why Nelson Semedo was not selected for the squad, but of course, it's easier to point the problems now...
@hellreaper - All three are very good, probably the deepest position in Portuguese football. But you're right, it was strange that Santos played Soares all year then switches to Pereira in the knockout stages.
Cristiano Ronaldo helped Edinson Cavani off the the field ? Mbappe 3. Cavani 3
@bilboy Cavani helped Penaldo leave Russia lol
Cavani, hot and sexy player ♥
Ronaldo misses next match due to yellow cards..lol
crap refereeing at times
Cavani with a monster all around performance, this was the best game by any player in this tournament.
Mbappe 2. di Maria 1. Cavani 2 = Paris SG + Krychowiak + Silva + neymar ...
@bilboy So? Besides, it's quite funny you mentioned Krychowiak, who barely played for PSG (btw I kinda feel for him, , because guy was really good at Sevilla and then his career became a mess).
@AnselmSelze but he means that all of these players scored in this WC.
@AnselmSelze yup, he even was in the La Liga Team of the Season in 2014–15, but he played about 11 matches for PSG in Ligue 1. Apparently Sevilla wants him back.
guerreiro 8.0 how? he was the worst player along side perreira
@ik32 Guerrero did everything he tried wrong
Better team went through. Cavani and Suarez are a great partnership. Cavani was brilliant tonight, deserves a 10 rating.
@Champion Well I have doubts about the "best team". I could feel with more time to play Portugal would turn it around, but I must congratulate Uruguay for being very efficient (with some Ricardo Pereira's fault).
Pepe almost saved Ronaldo's ass. 0 goals and 0 assists in knockout stages of World Cup. Messi was knocked out too, but gave 2 assists. The difference between a poacher and the best player.
@Davisson I prefer Messi as a person (although he's got no charisma at all), but let's be honest: he had a terrible WC. Grow up and admit it. It's just football, nothing important really, you can handle the truth.
@Davisson Messi was dreadful today too. One lucky assist and another when the game was already finished. He also relied on defensive errors for both assists and a good finish by Aguero. You are clutching at straws to try and make light of things for Messi from Ronaldo going out. This is a team sport, the sooner you raging fan boys realise it the better. I'm out now. I won't post here again and will enjoy the tournament. The bias on this place is boring.
@Champion Messi was much better than Ronaldo
@Champion best comment here so far
I have been saying since the tournament have started, that I don't understand why Nelson Semedo didn't got selected...At least Cedric should have kept playing in this match, instead of launching Ricardo Pereira
best player in the world in the pocket of godin HAHAHAHAHA
@takenbywine Godin is arguably the best defender in the world. Playing with a team like Portugal, there is no shame in that.
@Daking In my opinion Pepe is the best CB
@takenbywine ??? He had the whole team on him
@hellreaper If he had the whole team on him Portugal would be scoring every single minute with the rest of their team wide open. Interesting lie you are telling.
For two players that are meant to be the best ever Messi and Ronaldo have scored 0 goals between them in World Cup knockout rounds. They have played 36 times between them in world cups for 13 goals and 7 assists. They have both missed penalties. The Ronaldo v Messi constant debate is very old. They both don't perform well enough on the world stage to be considered close to a player like Pele and others. International football is the pinnacle and international level is the pinnacle of any sport out there. They aren't good enough at it when it matters, the world cup. If someone told you a player called X was the greatest attacker of all time and had played 36 games in world cups for 13 goals and 7 assist as the main attacker you'd laugh that's for sure and rightly so. They are both good players, but certainly not near the level of Pele who had to play in a time where the boots and balls were heavier, pitch worse, defenders tackled harder etc etc.
@Champion football is a team game. Don't compare the players by trophies. By your logic, Klose was better than Messi.
@Champion Not sure about maradona but none of them are touching pele
@Champion "They are both good players, but certainly not near the level of Pele..." I doubt you have seen Pele play enough (or have enough information about him) to know for CERTAIN that Pele was on another level to Messi and Ronaldo. And the World Cup is a pretty small sample size to draw conclusions from, especially one like "Pele is better than Ronaldo and Messi". A larger sample size would be more indicative of their abilities. For instance, Klose isn't a better footballer than Ronaldo (CR7) just because he has a better record in the World Cup. Also, did you consider the competitive level of football in Pele's time?
@Pico09 This is not playstation. U cannot compare players by their shot, speed and dribble rating. U have to take into consideration the context of time.
@Champion, lol Messi has at least 4 or 5 assists in knockout stages, played one final and won the Golden Ball of World Cup. Ronaldo nothing. Pele played in one of best teams of all time, 62 he didn't played and Brazil still won.
@Davisson Its true that he played with great players, but he was the undisputed best amongst them. He he was brazils leader, and won their first ever world cup at only 17 years of age, scoring 3 in the semifinals and 2 in the finals against sweden who were heavily favored. Pele was intentionaly fouled and forcet out of 2 world cups because he was THAT good. It is not fair to judge him because his teamates won 3 games without him. Portugal won the toughest euro championship match without ronaldo. Real madrid and Barca have won MANY important matches without great showings of messi or ronaldo... Do not forget that pele also dominated the brazilian league, in wich everyone of his "great" brasil teammates were playing. Santos was also not the biggest club before he came, yet he managed to win the club world cup 2 times (this was as important as the champions league those days) scoring 7 times in a 2 leg draw against benfica and milan
nothing more cool than looking Portugal suffering from their own medicine.
Ronaldo in 4 WorldCups, 0 goals & 0 assists in KO matches.
@Yman even Messi has 4 assists. And he’s a gnome!
Darn it. We loose the one game where we played better. But it was a cool game. Props to Uruguay. They and Portugal are very similiar teams with similar backgrounds and styles. Hope they do well in the next stage and I especially hope Cavani's injury isn't serious. It would be awful for Uruguay to loose him for the rest of the World Cup.
Rui Patricio's positioning in the second goal was a big error by him in my opinion !
@CirdomAkul Sorry, I missclicked report instead of reply: my bad. But I can't any fault in Rui Patricio's positioning, just a brilliant strike by Cavani
@CirdomAkul nope he is supposed to cover his near post which he did but it was an amazing finish by cavani
@CirdomAkul Pepe lost the header (despite Fonte being ready to challenge) and Perreira tucked in too far allowing a free shot. Keeper was wrong footed by a crisp strike, he had to position close to near post quickly and the shot was early and precise. Pepe and Perreira both deserve errors.
@CirdomAkul It was the right back's fault
Where is that basement mankid elucidate, now ? Commenting that Messi didn't do shit, even tho the last 2 goals were made by him. What did your idol do in this match ? Oh I know, no penalty for penaldo, no passes in front of the goalie hence no tap ins for tapnaldo. Uruguay defended well, and by that your autistic, self loving idol couldn't just dive... divenaldo smh. His next name is chokenaldo.
@Munty He's probably busy making or logging into loads of accounts to upvote himself in future. We will see him show his face again when Ronaldo next plays probably. He's very angry and illogical along with hellreaper, yman and a couple of others.
@Munty Always this childish debate about Messi and Ronaldo... Grow up, haters/lovers, and enjoy the game.
@Gronounours Messi and Ronaldo lovers annoy the hell out of me, both of them are overhyped and overrated. Loads of players are on their level.
@Champion - Ridiculous to even think that. Before them people would consider a goal every two matches a pretty good return, and a season in which for example Ronaldo (the Brazilian) scored 47 in 49 matches godlike. Then these guys turn up and score well over a goal a match for a decade. The two of them have been top goalscorers in Primera División 8 out of 9 times and top goalscorers of the CL for 11 seasons straight. I prefer Messi over Ronaldo, but both are head and shoulders over anybody since at least the 70s, when people played a very different game under the same name, at least among all attackers. To even suggest that "loads of players are on their level" means that they are underappreciated still.
Messi and Ronaldo out of the same tournament in the same day. Has there ever been a better day in the history of sport? I certainly can't think of one!
@uefalona haha
@uefalona Get a life.
It was a risk to play with 4312 after Uruguay scored the goal. Portugal had no trouble circulating the ball and creating space especially in the flanks. I thought they had to change to a 442 flat as it was a unnecessary risk to continue with the same formation. Lucas Torreira was tactically brilliant. The way he protected the back four was just impeccable. Great signing by Arsenal !
ouch, elucidate most likely has gouge his (or her) own eyes right now. poor fella :P this time will be remembered when 2 football stars got eliminated in one day.
yo why arent people who flamed messi last game flaming ronaldo too?
@BarcaPlsLetMeDown Double standards. Football is full of illogical fan boys. Especially on the internet.
@BarcaPlsLetMeDown these two is not in the same dimension, CR always was and always be the biggest WC choker, zero without the best midfielders in the world, if we change Messi with CR, France-Argentina 4:1 (without assists), Portugal-Uruguay 3:2 at least, this Portugal is a great team btw
Let's hope that Cavani's injury is not bad and that he can play the next Game. Uruguay showed great passion!
@Tico They are going to face France, so there is no much difference
@hellreaper What do you mean by "no much difference"? Losing a world class strikers will always make a difference
@tacuru87 I mean, a team that suffered this much to bypass Portugal, doesn't stand a chance against France, with or without Cavani.
@hellreaper Every game is different. Uruguay shouldn't be underestimated. We're talking about two amazing strikers who can do damage do any team + great defence. France were shit in all group stage. They've only done ONE good game so far - so easy with the arrogance.
You could feel in this match if there was more time to play, Portugal would draw or even win. Still it was a good game.
Can't understand why he played Pereira instead of Cedric... Second gol Was a terrible positioning by Pereira, and the first goal's cross came from his side too... Also, with all the DCs upfront and all the corners were short..
@Tico I agree. Ricardo let Cavani completelly alone in the 2nd goal...
Penaldo definitely most overrated footballer ever, ladies and gentleman the choker without his world class midfielders 2010 last 16, 2014 group stage, 2018 last 16, surreal from a 5times Golden ball winner, cant stop chokin, 6 WC knockout matches 0 goals 0 assists LMAO
@Pastore10 Ronaldos only good knockout performances came in 2006.
Goodbye CR7.
Suarez-Cavani partnership is lethal!
Best performance by Portugal at that World Cup so far but it might not be enough.
Cavani Hero , your pepe toilet paper sucks
@SUKABLYAD ???
What a great play and finish by Uruguay...
@neumi17 It was also defenses fault, because focused in 1 player and let another alone
CAVANIIIIIIII
Screw the haters Pepe legend
Uruguay will rape Portugal
@SUKABLYAD lol
suarez bot
hey ref give a penalty to penaldo, this choker is so one dimensional, please Modric, please Kroos, please Isco, hey guys where are you? Im a nobody without you guys, just an overrated poacher
@Pastore10 +Benzema who do all the hard work, and ofc Bale who is always there when CR chokes
Uruguay players screaming & going down, as soon as any contact, it's quite funny though.
@Geolardo Not the whole team though, it's specially Suárez.
That was most laughable moment with carvalho
Uruguay - 2 : Portugal -1
All over the sudden strange things happen. Uruguay plays attractive and offensive football and Ronaldo dribbles more than ones in a game. Good that things not always stay the same.
What a goal of Uruguay duo...goosebumps
Brilliant by Cavani, not too bad Suarez either.
No joao moutinho? Uruguay 1 Portugal 0
Uruguay is like Atletico Madrid, Portugal is like Real Madrid. Real Madrid is better and will win.
@Patrikovic I guess ATM won this time =)
@Patrikovic Nice joke, Portugal is like Getafe
@Patrikovic stop lying!
@Patrikovic Portugal is more similar to Atletico Madrid than Real Madrid...
1-0 for Uruguay.
Uruguay 5 - Portugal 4
Uruguay has better chance for winning the game
Under 3.5
To be fair it will be a gr8 night for all futball fens if after seen messi tear we see rolnldo tears too.My vote for winner goes to Uruguay
@svetoslav I predict France and Uruguay today. I just won a lot of money with a France win. I only place small bet on Uruguay as it can be a tight match. If Ronaldo plays his best then Portugal have a chance, otherwise Uruguay win.
@Champion Everybody bet on France and Uruguay ...
Guys, you are allowed your favourite players and teams. But grow up and argue like adults. Too much bad language, swearing and insults on here. Whoscored needs to clear it up, remove comments and probably issue bans as a deterrent. Whoscored doesn't seem very professional with it's comment section hardly being monitored. Just makes it seem like a make-shift website at times.
@Champion hurrah
i'm from iran and i hate portugal but i think they are winner tonight
@hatefio72 na irani hating people... what else is new?
@hatefio72 you are 100% ritgh portugal like real madrid, cheaters
@Pastore10 yeah i think a penalty again :))
ok, Portugal underperformed during the group stage and the football they've played (??) so far sucked. point taken. NOW: mind you that for more than a decade Portugal played some of the best football in europe, courtesy of players as Deco, Rui Costa, Figo, Pauleta. eye wondering football for years, zero titles. now Portugal has learned to play cynically. we don't play shit, our football sucks, we rely on resilience and Ronaldo and we're currently Euro Champions, beating on the way the "marvellous" Croatia, trashing the "magnificent" Wales, who had beaten "superBelgium" and sending the "unbeatable" French back home sobbing :) and in a few days we'll be pushing the baguettes overborad again! ;) AND THAT'S THAT ;)
many Portugal haters, which is definitely a good sign :)
0:0 / 0:1
Really can’t see Portugal beatig Uruguay here. Suare and cavani will be too much for them plus Uruguay’s defence>Portugal’s. 2-0 Uruguay. Portugal have been scraping through games since the euros
@flephmang Cavani is a crap player not even worth to mention. I can’t see any possibility he can net in big matches. Suarez and Laxalt would be a lethal pair though.
@ambrose said "Cavani is a crap player... can’t see any possibility he can net in big matches..." Talk about clueless fanboys. Up yours, pal
Uruguay win.
Penalty kicks and Portugal win
End of journey for both Messi & Ronaldo ;)
@Book : Not yet.
Uruguay will have to defend deeper than they did in the group stages to avoid being hit on the counter attack where Portugal, and especially Ronaldo, are at their best. The 4-3-1-2 formation with Torreira flanked by Betancur and Vecino as the CM/DM/CM three with Arrascaeta in the #10 behind Suarez and Cavani would give the best balance for me. Betancur didn't do much against Russia while playing in the #10 and I think he is best suited to play as a box-to-box midfielder. We know how tight the Uruguay defence can be when they sit back and with 'The Pitbull Torreira' (sorry) snapping at everyone in front of the back four, I think Portugal could have a problem breaking them down if Godin and co invite pressure and themselves look to counter. I see a quite low-scoring game but I think Uruguay will nick it 1-0, whether that is in regulation or after extra time, I don't know.
There isn't much to separate between the two except Uruguay's Clean Sheets......Some star's are ALSO one booking away from a ban, expect little drama .... 0 - 0 or 1 - 0 ... 1 / X
you cant get more 0-0 than this
Uruguay 1-2 Portugal
@Johnyomi97 got the figures right, just the other way around
Uruguay vs Portugal 1:0 easy money
I happen to support Uruguay although I think Portugal may be a better team. But if South Korea can eliminate Germany so humiliatingly, then Uruguay can slightly kick Portugal's butts 3-2..
Quarterfinal*
William Carvalho to earn a late penalty against who? Uruguay. Ronaldo converts and Portugal sit back for the last 10 mins to defend 1-goal lead. Oddly, every Uruguay attack during the final minutes is thwarted by substitute Guedes, including a some last minute moments of genius defending from the winger. Portugal advance and Ronaldo congratulates him for his performance, while Suarez gives some interviews in Spanish. Who's goin to the round of 16? Portugal. Great bunch.
Uruguay gonna destroy them 3-0
