PSG
- Captain Jordan Henderson was on the bench against Tottenham at the weekend but will be considered by Jurgen Klopp here, in what will be Liverpool's only change.
- Roberto Firmino suffered a nasty eye injury against Spurs and remains a doubt. With Dominic Solanke and Divock Origi doubts after picking up injuries on duty with the U23s, Daniel Sturridge is favourite to start if Firmino is not fit enough.
- Simon Mignolet was back on the bench for Liverpool on Saturday after suffering an injury during the international break.
- Gianluigi Buffon and Marco Verratti are both suspended for Paris Saint-Germain due to bans carrying over from last season.
- Alphonse Areola will start in goal as a result of Buffon's absence, while Marquinhos may be required in midfield to cover for Verratti.
- Fitness concerns and suspension ruled Neymar and Kylian Mbappe out against Saint-Etienne on Friday but both will start here, potentially in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
The statistics do not do Liverpool justice. They were territorially commanding (check out the "Player Positions" and "Action Zones" under match report to see just how dominant) and I'm not sure the 'possessions-based' calculation method is particularly good since it does not take into account how long the team have actually had the ball. I find it hard to believe 'possessions' correlates with 'possession' any better than the 'pass method' does, this was more than a 52-48 game to my eyes. Thomas Tuchel is brining a different style to the team, so that needs to be taken into account, but there are some personnel issues which are not going to be fixed whatever the game-plan. I've never seen a more indolent s.o.b than Neymar. There were regular arguments with Unai Emery on this issue and I don't see Tuchel staying quiet. When the #9's average position is in his own half, you know there are issues with getting him the ball. PSG played into Liverpool's hands both tactically and individually.
@SteveHyland you're likely correct that it's little if any more reflective of actual 'possession' compared to just tallying passes. I'm guessing, just by watching a couple select minutes for reference, that 'possessions' is something very close to 'successful touches', which excludes clearances, inaccurate passes etc. The biggest problem is obviously that there can be around 30 'possession events' one minute if the game is moving fast, and under 10 the next minute. So the first minute is weighted 3x as much in the possession stat which seems silly. The issue with pure time-based approach is figuring out how to exclude significant portions of the running clock in which the ball is not in play, which seems doable, but probably difficult.
@mirysics- A possession is defined by Opta as when the player controls the ball. Not a tackle, header or clearance but when they are able to make a footballing move with the ball at their feet. Right away, this is open to interpretation but they are at least trying to exclude the 'pinball' events where a player makes a poor pass straight to the opposition then the opposition player does the same etc. Only when the ball is in possession can this method be used, so that is a bonus too. The problem I find is that in making a calculation which can be conducted in real time (therefore, in theory, simple) they have actually made one which is convoluted when you analyse. Partly this is due to the modern "I want it now!" attitude. The chess clock method hat Squawka used would have to be retrospective (they count possession as being the start of any two consecutive passes) and that would be unsatisfactory for the vast majority of fans interested in stats....
… But by having a "Team A/B/Pause" chess clock situation, you can discount the time when the ball is out of play, include the pinball events (have to do this retrospectively in the fast moments) and derive a far more accurate representation of the game than Opta or any pass-based method can. Teams like Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs and (this season) Chelsea are going to have their stats inflated using any non-chess-clock method. The Burnley 2-0 Liverpool match from a couple of seasons ago had Liverpool's possession stat either at 80% (Opta), 85% (pass method) or 69% (chess clock method). It is extremely rare to see a team have 70%+ of the ball in real terms against XI men, maybe a handful of times in the top 5 leagues COMBINED per season. That is dominant enough. The ball is out of play roughly a third of the time, so Liverpool had the ball for ca. 43 of ca. 63 minutes.
@SteveHyland Your comments are so long. You could have stopped after your interesting action zone and player position observations. Liverpool had 12 key passes to 4 for PSG also.
Salah gets an error for giving the ball away but M'Bappe doesn't?
Anyone know how much distance milner covered tonight?
@Lukicks Why you ask? Did you bet on that ?! :)
@Lukicks- 12km.
@SteveHyland How to get these stats. I'm desperate to know about RM players.
@yash8117- Go to UEFA's site after the match (better leave it a couple of hours so they can update the stats), click on Champions League in the black bar at the top (left) of the page then go to the match that you want the player's stats for. Click on the match and you'll find the players listed vertically on opposite sides of the page. Click on the player's name to reveal basic stats then click on his name AGAIN to be taken to their UEFA profile page. Towards the bottom of that page, you'll see a "More Statistics" box. Click on that box and you'll find distance covered is one of the stats listed. Now, I think it is just their total tournament amount, so you will have to write down the distance covered after the first game then subtract the week two total (after week 2 obviously lol) from the first week to reveal week two's stats and so on.
@SteveHyland Don't they know how to calculate and post facts for a single match lol
Only thing bout who scored ratings and football it's hard to show anything but attacking players with high ratings based on stats so you regularly get midfielders that don't score goals like wini milner modric etc with low average ratings dispite being the best on the pitch same for defenders and goalkeepers
@Deguymari I agree. The ratings work well for the offensive side of the team, but become gradually more meaningless the more defensive you go. I feel that the difficulty of either scoring a goal or saving a goal should be a factor in the calculation. I know it's subjective, but at least it would say something about the quality of the action, rather than just giving max points for a tap in, when someone else has done the work for you. I also feel that the action before the assist should be more rewarded. If I look at at all the chances KDB created last year, which lead to an assist, and only got reward minor points as the involved player, it's ridiculous.
Wijnaldum only 6,6. Yeah, right
@Zootball The rating system i atrocious. Neymar getting a 7 when he was pocketed all night sums it up.
I really enjoyed the last goal. nice football
@fcbayern Brazil done Firmino dirty by picking garbage like Jesus over him.
@Champion true. he deserved to be in the starting line up in barzil.and btw sturridge showed he can be a good alternative if he got injury
Salah is the worst player ever! thanks to his wonderful passes to PSG players, we have 2 goals in Anfield now
@maxifoot Oh behave you knob! he's had a couple of meh games, he didn't start last season on fire either. he'll come good.
@maxifoot Funny how last season people like you were saying we are a 1 man team
@maxifoot He's lost confidence. I don't get it. He scored goals in WC.
@Champion lol its one game relax
@Lukicks My assessment is the season..
@Lukicks Are you sure its only one game? hahaaa
@maxifoot exactly..he's too biased..
Love this liverpool squad. Even when Salah has a rare off game everyone else picks up his slack. Team football.
milner is on the verge of being liverpool best player
@modric97 Milner is better than Henderson and Wijnaldum. He's a great engine room midfielder. Tireless runner.
the assist from neymar though was pure magic, wow
@realnews Are you being sarcastic? I didn't see this magic you're saying. But his through ball to Draxler was indeed pure magic. Pity it was blocked.
@MrNemobody- Yes he is, check out his username and what it is in reference to.
@realnews ikr, I wowed so loud for that goal.
@realnews It was botched from Van Dijk's tackle no?
Liverpool by far deserved the win no doubt but in reality they will always be second class in the 21st century, psg were training, yo.
@realnews You shouldn't be talking, piece of sh**
Salah was indeed the worst player on the pitch. It's great to see Liverpool doing great tho
Why not "Error lead to goal" by Mbappe?
@fosfor85 WhoScored's errors are like a roulette wheel. It's anyone's guess when an error will be given and to whom at this point.
@Champion WhoScored don't collect the stats, we have the data sent over by Opta and they determined that Mbappe didn't commit an error leading to a Liverpool goal on Tuesday night
@BenMcAleer1 Are you the Admin of this site?
@BenMcAleer1 Ok. I didn’t realise you weren’t deciding errors? I thought maybe the overall rating system plus errors were Whoscored. I made a general point not necessarily related to this game. I think players get away with it a lot (when they should receive an official error) personally.
@Champion nope, we just calculate the rating, which is formulated from the stats and data we receive from Opta
@BenMcAleer1 Yes, and the question is why, quite similar situation to the Salah's error, he had options to play safe, but wanted to dribble in the sensitive area and lost the ball... The difference is that Salah committed an error while passing not while dibbling.
@fosfor85 that was a magical assist from neymar who is smelling what is cooking, if psg wanna keep him they need to do something.
@fosfor85 why not error your backside out of here?
@realnews I wish you all the best, but please don't post comments any more in reply to mine. That would save time of the whoscored users who want to exchange opinions about Football.
YEEEAH! I love this game! LIVERPOOL!
Bobby FIRMINO scores the 3rd goal
What a match..Liverpool deserved the win.
@spectre08 practice match dude
@realnews Lol..i don't even like Liverpool but they clearly deserved the win today.
Firmino 2020
pretty much deserved
Liverpool and playing well and still not winning is actually depressing- I am a United fan and Neymar is my favourite player but you gotta feel for them.
@nonamerly Thanks for jinxing the draw, enjoy the loss Neymar fan.
@arcglenum Err okay? Respecting the opponent is bad now that's a great philosophy. Remember that group stage losses don't matter too much- look at Real Madrid. Horrible record against Tottenham of all teams in their group and then they went and won the UCL. Second in their groups for the last 3 seasons (I think) and have won all 3.
Never mind. Shiny teeth.
What I like most in Liverpool is that even when they're ahead they still pursue for next goals. And the second thing of course is the high spirit. They prove that even on such high level you can win a game just by trying harder than the opponent.
I can see PSG to bounce back in the second half and scores two goals
@Cannavaro69 I can see your prediction (1-2 PSG) gone down the drain with just 40mins into the game.
Liverpool scored 2 goals without Firmino and none of Mane and Salah scored, LOL Neymar is so difficult to contain, Milner casually tackles and robbed him 5 times.
penalty liverpool 2
PSG looks pretty meh right now
Hard to see both teams scoring the way they are playing
@footballover I like your predictions cause they're always wrong LOL
@footballover LOL
Both teams playing too cautious
@footballover What match are you watching?! :)
Had no idea PSG bought Bernat and, more surprisingly, Choupo-Moting (!). For the latter, did the positive scout report arrive 4 years late?
I cant understand why Firmino on in the bench
@Cannavaro69 He had accident in a recent PL game against Tottenham, sth with the eye.
put all your money on psg guys, no firmino no win
@pasopati I already put
@Cannavaro69 unluckyyyy
God damn, Firmino is on the bench. That's arguably the biggest loss for Liverpool, and a shame for this glorious match. Hope pool can still do it. Go go Liverpool. YNWA! FU Vertonghen !!!
Firmino,keita on the bench lfc will LOOOOOOOOSE
God damn, Firmino is on the bench. That's arguably the biggest loss Liverpool could have, and that's a shame for this glorious match. Hope pool still can do it. Go go Liverpool. YNWA
BTTS and over 2.5 goals
1:2 PSG
@Cannavaro69 Your prediction didn't even make it past 40mins.
Tips for today : PSG X2 @1.69 / Tottenham X2 @1.50 ....Total odds: @2.50 , that bet for high stake , Good luck guys
@Cannavaro69 HAHAHAHAHA you take 66% chance - X2 for both matches and you lost twice. I said you pal - please don't bet! :D
@Cannavaro69 are you sure?
@drapdullah No :)
hahahahaha whoscored.com admin really funny...no way Liverpool can beat PSG
@Cannavaro69 again, I don't know if you're trolling or if you're just a deluded PSG fan. Either way... HAHAHAHA!
@Cannavaro69 What you saying mate
@Cannavaro69 hahahhahaa who's really funny now
1 to win and under 3.5 goals
2-2.Both teams have very attacking front 3 players. Firmino,Mane and Salah v Mbappe,Cavani and Neymar.
Over25
River pool 0 - 3 Paris SG
@shakes niceee
@shakes PSG players are a bunch of loosers
PSG conceded 3 goals in 2 away games this season so far, against the mighty clubs like Nimes and Guingamp. Liverpool conceded 0 at home in just as many games against Brighton and West Ham. PSG is defensively susceptible away from home, no matter the opposition, something Tuchel will probably be very wary of and in order to fix that leak they'd better play more compact against Liverpool's front 3, a high line will be suicide at Anfield. If PSG tries to outscore Liverpool from the start they will be found wanted in the last 20mins.
Paris have 5.12 xgA in League 1. Five point twelve! against Caen, Guingamp, Angers, Nimes and Saint-Etienne. LFC, contrariwise, have only 2.94 in EPL. I'm sure that PSG will concede 1 goal at least, probably 2 or 3. But their strikeforce can level it up. BTTS & 2.5+ definetly
@JoseMourinhoo
There is absolutely no point Liverpool can handle PSG.. 1:2 / 0:3 Di Maria, Neymar, Silva
@ambrose I don't know if you're just trolling or if you're just a deluded PSG fan.
@ambrose @JoseMourinhoo Masterclass predictions.
@ambrose agree with you bro
2-2, Klopp to hug 4-5 players
@jcg There are bets for activities after the final whistle? I'd like to bet Jose will never hug a player at the end of a game.
@jcg Where i can find this bet LOL
@jcg Best bet
Can't wait
Can't wait
Best option here is Home win; Dc1x & btts ;3-1
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BARCELONA 3-0 PSV INTER 2-1 SPURS BRUGGE 0-2 B DORTMUND GALATASARAY 1-1 L MOSCOW LIVERPOOL 3-1 PSG MONACO 0-2 A MADRID RS BELGRADE 1-3 NAPOLI
@Miike17 How did you get that result of Inter match :) you almost got the result of Barca match also except the late goal of messi, nice try bro
@Miike17 I like your confedince
@Cannavaro69 So far he got Barce 3-0 PSV close(ended 4-0), Inter 2-1 Spurs hit the jackpot, Liverpool leading 2-1, Atletico still winning, and could still get Napoli/Dortmund/Galatasaray games right. On the other hand, your Liverpool 1-2 PSG prediction did not even make it past 40mins of the first half, all that with Liverpool playing without Firmino. LOL
With the noise at Anfield and the way LFC mid-field plays at home, I say 3-1 Liverpool.
Gonna go with either 2-1 or 3-1. I feel like there's a vibe that PSG has more quality then Liverpool but I honestly don't think that's true. PSG's CL results have been mediocre at best and they only win Ligue 1 every year because it's jam-packed with Stoke City teams. Mbappe and Neymar are lethal but I think Liverpool should be able to create more then enough chances for themselves to pick up 3 points with.
3-2
Home will win in both fixtures and Liverpool will qualify
@Nanami oops I screwed up, totally thought this is 16-Round
@Nanami Go back to sleep
@Nanami - Easy to do, seeing that it's snow outside and it's February again ;-)
Liverpool look good for a victory here. 2-1
Easy win for PSG , 2_0 or 3_1 Cavani and Mbappe to Score
@shanks. spot on fella
@JoseMourinhoo spot on indeed, great PSG win.
SO 3_1 For liverpool?l!Thats Funny prediction ... , PSG wins here and BTS , Cavani MOTM
@shanks. ok mate
Omg, I am so excited for this game, my stomach hurts. I think PSG with Di Maria, Neymar, Cavani and Mbappe will be difficult for Liverpool. Liverpool 1 - 3 PSG. Mbappe with a couple of goals, Neymar or Cavani with the 3th. No matter the result, Champions League evenings with exceptionally atmosphere in Anfield will either way be a highlight.
Paris SG to win, but not to nil.
firmino is ready
@fafaq ops I clicked report, sorry. I were supposed to click reply, because I just read that Firmino may still not be ready for this encounter after all. Why can't we just click unreport or something?
@fafaq good, he's so important for this team. Didn't look good this finger through his head thing. Damn Vertonghen
I hope Klopp will destroy Tuchel :)
Sadio Mane will be the Man of the Match
Liverpool cannot contain Mbappe and Neymar. I see Allison conceding more than 2 goals.
Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals
it is gonna be a really good match .both team on fire
X2
Don't be too sure stefanm. I see Liverpool winning with BTTS. 3-2
cant wait Neymar to destroy this overrated english looser team.
@stefanm The only thing overrated is your lazy prick of an idol. My nan would have done more running than him last night.
@stefanm Kept quiet by a 19 year old
@stefanm ahahahahahahahaha
@stefanm - If a Champions League finalist is overrated, then what about a team that only made it to the round of 16?
@stefanm in your dreams baby
@stefanm lol
@stefanm Neymar is possibly the most overrated player on the planet, and this will become apparent against any half decent side.
Liverpool 1-3 PSG . Neymar ⚽⚽Cavani⚽...
@amranhossen06 Oh dear... Neymar was useless last night. I would have been fuming with Neymars lack of effort to track back if I was anyone on that PSG team, but especially the poor fullback.
@amranhossen06 good luck with that
BTTS
4-1 LFC, Salah, Firmino x2, Alexander-Arnold, Mbappe
@CaptinSprinklez Keep dreaming baby
@CaptinSprinklez in your dreams baby
@stefanm @Cannavaro69 Not bad, he got 2 scorers right, what did you 2 trolls get?
