Team News

  • Paraguay have struggled to nail down a first choice goalkeeper over the last 12 months and could pick anyone of Alfredo Aguilar, Junior Fernández and Antony Silva against Qatar.
  • Júnior Alonso and Santiago Arzamendia are in competition for a starting berth at left-back having shared the position over the last year. Meanwhile, West Ham's Fabián Balbuena and former AC Milan defender Gustavo Gomez should be Paraguay's partnership in central defence. Iván Piris or Bruno Valdez will start at right-back.
  • Newcastle creator Miguel Almiron is the one to watch in attack for Paraguay, while Federico Santander and veteran Oscar Cardozo battle for a starting berth in attack.
  • Qatar won the Asian Cup at the start of the year and are expected to stick with their usual XI from that tournament.
  • They tend to switch between a 4-2-3-1 and 4-5-1 formation, though did go five at the back against Brazil in their final warm-up game for this summer's Copa America.
  • As Abdulkareem Salem Al Ali is not in the squad, Abdelkarim Hassan is fine to play at left-back.
  • Pedro Miguel was a mainstay in the team during the Asian Cup but is not in the squad this time around and will need replacing at right-back. Hamid Ismaeil is the favourite to deputise.

  • Paraguay have only won one of their last eight matches, though that was their final Copa America warm-up match.
  • Qatar pulled off an upset to win the Asian Cup at the start of the year, defeating Japan in the final.
  • Qatar lost 2-0 to Brazil in their final warm-up game for the Copa America, which ended a seven-match winning streak.
  • Though Paraguay are expected to win this match, do not be surprised if Qatar make it difficult for the South American side.
