Team News

  • Neither Luis Suarez nor Edinson Cavani have started a game for Uruguay in 2019, while the former came into the tournament with fitness concerns owing to a knee injury suffered towards the end of last season. Despite the fact both Maxi Gomez and Cristhian Stuani have both played well for Uruguay this year, both are expected to be benched in Uruguay's Copa America opener.
  • Uruguay head coach Oscar Tabárez has struggled to find the right balance in midfield to get the best out of both Suarez and Cavani in recent tournaments and that will again be his main problem this summer. Players like Lucas Torreira and Giorgian de Arrascaeta may have to settle for a place on the bench here.
  • Former West Ham forward Enner Valencia is not a guarenteed starter for the national team but he came off the bench and scored in one of their warm-up matches for this summer's Copa America and will hope to start here.
  • Former Manchester United captain Antonio Valencia will be eager to get as many minutes under his belt as he can this summer after barely featuring in his final season for the Premier League giants. He tends to play in his old position of right wing for the national team.
  • Máximo Banguera or Alexander Domínguez will start in goal for Ecuador in their Copa America opener against Uruguay. As Juan Carlos Paredes is not in the squad, Jose Quintero should be fine to start at right-back. Meanwhile in midfield, Carlos Carlos Gruezo could get the third spot in midfield alongside Jefferson Intriago and Jefferson Orejuela.

  • Uruguay have won all three of their matches in 2019 by a combined scoreline of 10-0.
  • Ecuador are winless in their last four matches, though have only lost one of their last four against Uruguay.
  • Uruguay are the clear favourites on paper, but as recent matches between the two teams has shown, they cannot underestimate Ecuador
