Team News

Liverpool
Aston Villa
  • The heavy defeat to Manchester City on Thursday makes an XI that was hard to predict arguably even more so, with Jurgen Klopp perhaps less likely to make sweeping changes as he challenges his players to make a real response.
  • Nevertheless, there will undoubtedly be some rotation, with a number of fringe players given a chance including the likes of James Milner, Naby Keita, Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi.
  • We could also see a first league start for youngster Neco Williams, who has impressed in recent cameos and could afford Trent Alexander-Arnold a rest.
  • Having previously played four games in 11 days, Villa have had eight days to prepare for this match, with the lopsided scheduling criticised by Dean Smith.
  • The break should have given Frederic Guilbert a chance to recover and come into contention but Bjorn Engels will probably miss out once more and Matt Targett is also out.
  • Following a string of unconvincing displays from Orjan Nyland we could see an emotional return to Anfield and the starting XI for former Red Pepe Reina in goal.

Prediction

  • Villa fans will have been delighted to see Jurgen Klopp name a full strength lineup on Thursday but less so to see the Reds get battered, with a backlash an understandable concern for the relegation dwellers.
  • There's no doubt the Reds boss will demand a reaction to the defeat in midweek, regardless of the lineup he fields, with rotation expected.
  • The visitors have had plenty of time to prepare for this game but with just eight games remaining still have no clear identity in their approach or formation, so there should be only one winner.
