- Louis van Gaal picked uncapped Justin Bijlow as his goalkeeper in his first game back in charge of the Netherlands and not Tim Krul, who he previously worked with at the 2014 World Cup.
- Denzel Dumfries was a star performer for the Netherlands at Euro 2020 and he will hope to start here after only coming off the bench in their 1-1 draw with Norway on Wednesday.
- Van Gaal has confirmed Stefan de Vrij will start on Saturday but Virgil van Dijk may be rested after just recovering from a long-term knee injury.
- Daley Blind is suspended for an accumulation of bookings and needs replacing at left-back. Uncapped Tyrell Malacia is the only other recognised left-back in the squad.
- Frenkie de Jong and Gini Wijnaldum are nailed on to start in midfield leaving one spot left for others to fight for. Davy Klaassen got the nod against Norway and scored.
- Borussia Dortmund forward Donyell Malen is pushing to start against Montenegro on Saturday night.
- Stevan Jovetic has withdrawn from the Montenegro squad in a blow for the away side. Esteban Saveljch is also unavailable.
- Igor Vujacic is suspended for an accumulation of bookings for Montenegro and will need replacing at centre-back. Zarko Tomasevic may move inside from left-back to cover.
