Team News

France
Australia
  • Christopher Nkunku, who made the final World Cup squad, has had to withdraw after picking up a knee injury. Randal Kolo Muani replaced him in the squad.
  • Similar to Nkunku, Presnel Kimpembe was called up but has withdrew after he failed to recover from his injury in time. Axel Disasi takes his place.
  • Karim Benzema is also ruled out, after he left France training after 15 minutes, and could miss the whole tournament. Olivier Giroud will deputise.
  • Harry Souttar has only just recovered from an ACL injury before his selection in the final squad, so he may miss out the first match against France.
  • Martin Boyle has been ruled out of the World Cup.
  • Ajdin Hrustic, who has 20 caps to his name, missed three Verona games because of an ankle injury, but he should start if fit.

Prediction

  • World Cup holders France take on Australia in the first round of group stage games.
  • The French are the overwhelming favourites for the game, with quality players who star at the top level of European football throughout their ranks. France come into the tournament looking to become only the third ever nation to retain the trophy after Italy and Brazil.
  • Australia qualified for the World Cup through a nervy penalty shootout against Peru but will appear at their fifth World Cup in a row. They have failed to make it out of the group on the last three occasions, only qualifying for the round of 16 in 2006.
  • Given the clear gulf in class, we could see a cagey performance from the Aussies, and we expect France to take advantage of that, comfortably winning the game.

  • It's quite amazing how good this France performs, as it did in 2018. On paper, it's not that great of a selection. If you take away Mbappe, the squad really doesn't seem all that better than Argentina's or England's. Deschamps deserves credit, I think. In some or another, the players just click and make up a complete selection.

  • @Gewoonmoi Why did you mention Argentina? Take Messi and di Maria away and Argentina has a mediocre squad without any finesse or creativity.

  • @Gewoonmoi On paper =/= on the pitch

  • @Gewoonmoi I get what you saying, but it's disrespectful for teams like Bayern, Liverpool, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, AC to have their starting players called a 'bad selection'... England didn't call up 2 cup winning starters in Rome, but start benchwarmers like Maguire and Grealish.. lol.. If you consider Otamendi and Romero to be better than Upamecano and Konate, well, okay

  • @Kingjigga There is no such club as AC. If you are referring to AC Milan, the AC acronym means "football club" in italian. So that's why everyone says just Milan. But I wouldn't expect an African expert to know that.

  • @Sputnik It is great of you, wherever hell hole you come from, that my not completing the name Milan is the only thing you can correct.. Besides, stick to your EPL and let us the football experts do the proper analysis of ALL teams, regardless of region...

  • @Kingjigga I'm not a Premier League fan, I'm a La Liga fan actually. And I couldn't miss it because the only people I've seen use "AC" instead of Milan are, well... Americans.

  • @Gewoonmoi "The squad really doesn't seem all that better than Argentina's or England's", seriously? They have top class players at every line.

  • @Thypot No, they don't.

  • Australia showed heart though.

  • Good. I hate France.

  • @Shiznit Why?

  • @Thypot Why not?

  • FFS I hope this is not like Saudi

  • @Marbella why?

  • @wilde As i have a large bet on France

  • @Marbella How large?

  • SlapHappyMbappe says you can't trap me. WHERE'S THE LINEUPS??? I'm about to make some cash here after 2 0-0s and an Argentinian collapse France is going to pummel these dudes.

  • Draw.

  • France winning this one 4-1

  • @toleadibilu bro wtf

  • 2-1

  • 4-0

  • Lloris has a lot of experience but he's not as sharp or athletic as he once was.

  • France 3-0

  • I love that Giroud is still in the team. Na na na na Giroud!!!!

  • France -2

  • France will be win. but so hard game.... i predict he will win not both score

  • 2:1 FR

  • Over 2.5 goals @1.72

  • 1 easy win

  • France takes it 2-1, I believe they will break the champion curse. They began it - they will end it

  • "France come into the tournament looking to become only the second ever nation to retain the trophy after Brazil." Third actually, Italy also retained it in 1938.

  • @Dobbo25 Read it again, they said 3rd country..

  • @Kingjigga it's possible they editted the text.

  • @Dobbo25 Yes, because Italy won in 1934 (Ivan Eklind etc.)

  • France will likely choke here...I see a red card and a draw....

  • france obviously. 3-0

  • @Icarax well i will count this 6/8

  • @Icarax France are awful
