Team News

  • Mallorca's awful form continued in midweek as they followed up a 4-0 defeat by Levante last weekend with a 5-0 hammering at home by Sevilla.
  • That extended the Islanders' run without a win in all competitions to 13 games, but with manager Joaquin Caparros insistent that he will not resign, he needs his players to produce a big performance against Athletic to save his job.
  • A number of first-team regulars including Tomer Hemed and Victor will return after being rested in midweek, whilst Anderson Conceição could come in to partner Jose Nunes ahead of Pedro Geromel.
  • Athletic also suffered a huge disappointment in the Copa del Rey this week as they were dumped out by Segunda Division B side Eibar.
  • Their league form has picked up of late, though, and they have taken 10 points from the last possible 12 against opponent, excluding the games against Barcelona and Real Madrid.
  • Andoni Iraola's continued absence means that Jonas Ramalho will keep his place at right-back, whilst Ander Iturrapse should replace Mikel San Jose in midfield as he returns from suspension.
  • Iker Muniain though is expected to again only make the bench.

  • Mallorca have looked dreadful for the past couple of months and have yet somehow dropped to an entirely new level of ineptitude in the past few weeks as they failed to beat a Real Zaragoza side with 10 men for 78 minutes and then conceded nine goals without reply over the last two games.
  • The most galling thing for Caparros is that his side's are normally renowned for their defensive solidity and organisation but that seems to have completely disappeared as confidence within the squad has sunk to an all-time low.
  • And whilst Athletic sit just five points ahead of the Islanders, they do at least still have a striker in form in Aritz Aduriz who could make all the difference in what is unlikely to be a great spectacle but could be Caparros' last stand at the Iberostar.
