Team News

  • Having already qualified as group winners, Barcelona could field a weakened side for the visit of Benfica, though they won't want to slip up at home to a team from neighbouring Portugal.
  • It has been confirmed that Xavi, Mascherano, Pedro, Alba and Fabregas will all be rested, so the likes of Thiago Alcantara and Adriano will play.
  • Leo Messi will start continues in his pursuit of the all time record for goals in a calendar year, an achievement that he may well complete here.
  • Benfica have a full squad to choose from for the trip to Camp Nou, with centre back Luisao back in the fold after serving a 2 month suspension for pushing over a referee. He has played more or less every game since returning and will partner Ezequiel Garay here.
  • Oscar Cardozo will lead the line with Lima.
  • Ola John provides another option on the left in place of Gaitan, who has only started twice in the Champions League this season.

  • Barcelona have nothing riding on this game, with their passage to the next round already secured, but Benfica have everything to play for. The Portuguese side are seond in the group ahead of Celtic, and thus need to match or better the Scottish side's result against Spartak Moscow.
  • While a trip to Barcelona is hardly the ideal game for Benfica to pick up such a result, the Catalans have looked beatable at home in the Champions League this season, coming from behind after early scares in both if their home games so far - against Celtic and Spartak.
  • Furthermore, there is no pressure on them to win this time around, other than the fact that the fans might be unhappy with anything but victory. Benfica stand an outside chance of pulling off an upset, but with Messi seeking to make tonight an historic one on a personal level, he may be in unstoppable form.

  • Thiago will be MVP

  • i know bench means they are not playing :)

  • not today,Barça is playing with the second team...

  • Victor Valdés, Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquets and Messi are starting on the bench

  • Messi's record breaking match is right here.

  • Barça will win this easy. Benfica has an ofensive team, but weak midfield players, and slow defenders. As this is Champions League there will be no "favours" from referee, so im sure barça will win this one easy. 3-1 or 4-1. Messi to score at least 2 goals.

  • barca lose 0-1

  • Messi WILL break the record tomorrow, i think he'll score 2. My score FCB 4 - 2 Benfica

  • lol messi is going to go off for 3

  • 1-1 :d
