Team News

  • Didier Drogba came off the bench to score once and assist another goal in the comeback win over Akhisar for his debut on Friday night. He made such an immediate impact and has such a great deal of Champions League experience that he should go into the starting XI.
  • Sabri Sarioglu is likely to drop to the bench after a poor performance last time out and be replaced by Emmanuel Eboue.
  • Burak Yilmaz is carrying a knock but should be fine to start up front alongside Drogba.
  • Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has travelled to Istanbul with manager Jens Keller willing to risk his star striker who has missed the last two games due to an eye injury.
  • Schalke still have several injury worries, with Papadopoulos and Afellay both out as well as first choice keeper Lars Unnerstall.
  • Raffael is cup-tied, while Joel Matip and Jermaine Jones are both one yellow card away from suspension.

  • Galatasaray were jubilant to have joined Manchester United in the knockout stages of the Champions League, and they went on to strengthen significantly over the winter break, with Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba brought in to the squad.
  • Jens Keller is coming under increasing pressure to get results, with his side only having won 1 of the 6 matches he has taken charge of. Michel Bastos has been a revelation since signing, with 3 goals in 3 appearances, but they need more of their players to recapture the form that saw them win Group B ahead of Arsenal.
  • Back when Schalke made it through the group stages they would probably have been considered favourites to win this game, but since their form has dropped so dramatically and Galatasaray have made a couple of big signings, the home team might well take a lead to Germany for the 2nd leg.
