Team News

Arsenal
Aston Villa
  • Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski were in action for Germany but neither played more than a half, though Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla both played for the majority of their respective nations' international friendlies on Wednesday.
  • The aforementioned England man picked up a knock but should be fit, as did Bacary Sagna who is now considered a doubt.
  • Vermaelen is certain to miss out with a back injury, so Koscielny will start with Kieran Gibbs likely to get the nod at left-back ahead of Monreal, who is doubtful.
  • Elsewhere Aaron Ramsey pulled out of international duty in midweek but could be in contention to vie for a starting berth with Arteta to miss out through injury.
  • Christian Benteke was a late substitute for Belgium in midweek but Andreas Weimann played the entire 90 minutes for Austria on Wednesday, while new signing Aleksandar Tonev was withdrawn halfway through the second half for Bulgaria.
  • Nevertheless all three may play having started the last pre-season friendly against Malaga, and of the remaining new boys Antonio Luna and Jores Okore are most likely to feature, though the latter will face competition from Nathan Baker.
  • Charles N'Zogbia and Chris Herd are sidelined, while Darren Bent, Shay Given, Stephen Ireland, Barry Bannan and Alan Hutton are all unlikely to feature after it was made clear that they were not in Paul Lambert's plans.

Prediction

  • Arsenal have made only one signing in the transfer window thus far, and young striker Yaya Sanogo is unlikely to be fit for the weekend so it will be a familiar line-up to the one that finished strongly in the previous campaign.
  • Villa, on the other hand, have added to their ranks significantly and could hand a number of players their competitive debut, though left-back Luna is the most likely to play from kick-off.
  • The fact that the Gunners have done so little business may actually benefit them in the first part of the season as the other teams must integrate new players, though Villa's signings have all had a full pre-season with the club so this is unlikely to be plain sailing for the hosts.
