Team News

Uruguay
Costa Rica
  • Luis Suarez won't start for Uruguay, Oscar Tabarez has confirmed, so Diego Forlan will partner Edinson Cavani in attack.
  • The Liverpool striker is a doubt and may not be risked here.
  • Midfielder Diego Perez will be pressing for a starting spot, but Tabarez is set to start Walter Gargano and Egidio Arevalo Rios in the middle of the park.
  • Costa Rica were rocked by the news that Alvaro Saborio will miss the World Cup due to injury, meaning Marcos Urena is expected to lead the attack.
  • Keylor Navas impressed in goal for Levante last season and he will be tested once more this summer, especially if the Uruguay attack is firing on all cylinders.

Prediction

  • Uruguay are undefeated in their last 4 meetings with Costa Rica, winning 2. The Celeste will be looking to get their World Cup campaign off to a winning start, especially with England and Italy facing off later in the evening.
  • Much of the focus will be on the attacking duo of Suarez and Cavani. The pairing netted 47 league goals between them last term for Liverpool and PSG, respectively, and Uruguay's hopes will rest on whether they can hit the ground running in Brazil.
  • However, they will have to work hard if they are to find a way past Navas. The Costa Rica shotstopper impressed in La Liga for Levante last season and supporters will look to the goalkeeper to ensure they have a fighting chance of making it out of Group D, especially with striker Saborio injured.
  • Should Navas be able to deny the Celeste's attack, Costa Rica have the offensive quality in Bryan Ruiz, Joel Campbell and Christian Bolanos to hurt their South American counterparts.
  • Nonetheless, going forward, Uruguay have the upper hand to secure the win, but this could be a closely fought affair.

  • Cavani is the man Uruguay go up or down with here.

  • Hmmm I was pretty sure about the 1st sent off in this WFC would be an Uruguayan! He should've been sent off twice by the way

  • :Hart; Johnson, Cahill, Jagielka, Baines; Gerrard, Henderson; Sterling, Rooney, Welbeck; Sturridge

  • Uruguay without suarez is a joke

  • @sun Not a joke but a completely overhyped team

  • Huehuehue

  • Campbell playing really good tonight

  • error by the keeper on the 3rd. should have stayed on his line

  • @Focus Yep. Dreadful keeping. No need for him to rashly come out like that. It's going to be very hard to beat the keeper there if he stays put.

  • LOL

  • Looooooooooooooooooool 1:2

  • Yes, totally deserved !

  • 1-1. Time for Suarez to come on?

  • Not sure I would have given that penalty...

  • That was a clear penalty

  • Well done Costa Rica so far...!

  • Uruguay 3-0 Costa rica

  • @MHoY lol

  • could be sumthin like 4 nil if they had Suarez, but I guess 2-0 without him

  • 2:0

  • I think 1-1 1-0 for Uruguay. Navas is amazing but if the rest of the team doesnt help out he will only be able to do so much

  • Hard game for Uruguay - nobody expects something from Costa Rica here and this is their main advantage!

  • 3-0

  • 3-0
