pt.2- Oezil showed some glimpses of brilliance. When he's at his best, he makes passes that only the top 0.1% of top flight players in the world can but the consistency is not yet there. Even though he's listed as left wing, he wondered inside many times and actually all his good play was done from a central position. Given Ramsey is injured yet again, I would like us to adopt a genuine 3-man midfield with Coquelin in the middle; Cazorla & Oezil either side. Ideally you'd have a box-to-box midfielder sitting next to Coquelin with only 1 #10 but Rosicky isn't in Wenger's long-term plans due to his age so that's the best option imo. Sanchez up front in a false 9 position didn't really work. A lot of plays broke down when there wasn't someone to hold the ball up and Sanchez rarely stays in 1 position on the field. I think Welbeck in the middle with Sanchez left wing and Walcott right wing would be the best front 3 option of our current squad.
@SteveHyland in regard to your commenting about Ozil being played out of position; Arsenal haven't played with out and out wingers for about 20 years now. It's our full backs that provide most of the width. Football at the top level is all about fluidity and the intelligence to fill spaces as they appear. 4-4-2 is long dead. Ozil or whoever else plays in the wider forward positions always have licence to move around the pitch, look at the heat maps. Also, we clearly DO play with a 3 man midfield, this game it was Coq, Ramsey (your archetypal Box to Box midfielder) and Santi.
@Dadaist- Oh and as for Arsenal not playing with wingers for 20 years, Walcott has rarely been away from the right wing and has acted as a winger- running at full-backs and putting in crosses, albeit many bad ones. On the left we've had multiple players been told to play there and as a "winger"- Nasri (who stated it as a reason for leaving), Gervinho, Podolski, Cazorla, Chamberlain and now Sanchez. Filling in spaces left by players isn't a modern phenomenon, the only league it hasn't been such since the turn of the 20th century is Sunday league.
@Dadaist- Chelsea, best team in the league play with 2 wingers who largely stay out wide and drift in as do the 2nd best team in the league. Ditto for the best team in Germany and the best team in Spain and since almost every top team in the world plays 4-2-3-1, the 2 widest players of the 3 have to act as wingers or the play becomes too central and therefore predictable and easy to defend against. That's what happens. They don't have to be Ryan Giggs to be "wingers", but Oezil is a number 10. Been a number 10 his whole career except since he's come to Arsenal and is now out wide therefore out of position. You either didn't read or comprehend the part about having 3 midfielders, I stated I'd like us to have a genuine 3-man (a 4-3-3 instead of a 4-2-3-1) with Cazorla and Oezil either side of Coquelin. I said nothing about us not having so in this game and actually mentioned Ramsey's injury prior to the part about a 3-man midfield and latterly about Rosicky's age.
@SteveHyland Arsenal do play with a "genuine 3-man midfield", recently Coquelin behind Ramsey and Santi, not sure why you can't comprehend that. The teams you mentioned are playing with inside forwards, not wingers, they move around the pitch to exploit space. football has evolved, the only true winger playing for a top team in the premier league is probably Navas. Ozil has been playing in exactly the same position as he played for Germany in the World Cup, an inside forward on the left (they happened to win that competition if you remember?) on the other side they had Muller (a "winger".lol.?) Since Ozil came back he played very well and provided the team with several goals and assists. In 3 starts since coming back from injury Walcott has scored 3 goals and attempted just 3 crosses yet you say he "has rarely been away from the right wing and has acted as a winger- running at full-backs and putting in crosses"
Leicester played well and we didn't. Our ball retention in particular has been poor for ages. We should (and require since our game is built around possession) have 60% minimum against every team in the league at the Emirates but I can't remember the last time we did in the league. I think we JUST deserved to win. Leicester had some decent play but if you only get 4 shots on target, you don't deserve to score more than once imo. That's a Diego Costa level conversion rate as it is. Mahrez played well but it's not a surprise that he has only scored twice this season even though he gets in excellent goal scoring positions. He gave our full-backs problems (Bellerin in particular who was crap defensively today) but in this league, the end product is what matters and his finishing has been mediocre all year to be blunt. pt 1/2
Rubbish football match. 2-0 and then the players lazy to run again. bad conduct exactly
Özil finally showing some form. Showing glimpses of his old self. Hope he keeps this up.
worst refereeing ever !!!
no goal till half time from arsenal
Interesting tactics from Leicester. It could frustrate Arsenal but it requires their keeper to play well
2-0 I hope
2:1 narrow win for Arsenal, this game wont be so easy as the odds shows us.
@Demian The odds have nothing to do with the margin of victory.
Sanchez will come back, Carzola Will be man of the match again, Arsernal will win 3-1
Arsenal looked in bad shape against Tottenham and Leicester looked good against Crystal P. but they failed to score. I think Leicester will score.
Or perhaps, mostly, rather him than coquelin
Why won't Özil start, he found his form (maybe not his full) directly. Scored two goals in two games now. Rather see him on the pitch than ramsey or walcott.
2-0
actually steve, us being manager-less is just an urban myth, pearson is alive and kicking , as are our team. you are clear favourites , but i work in a betting office and see favourites lose, evey hour of the day.we wont roll over like villa did, good luck.arsenal 1 leicester 1 mahrez first goal
@foxeerod- Sky broke that story too so that was a strange one. Leicester are 2nd bottom in away form with only 7 points all season (only a point against teams that will finish in the top 8) and our home form is 3rd best with 24 points so a draw looks extremely unlikely, even Leicester scoring looks unlikely. I wouldn't be surprised if we were to concede and drop points though, we are Arsenal after all. :-(
I'm going with 2-0, with Sanchez and Welbeck scoring. We haven't looked as fluid and the amount of goals scored depends on how early the first goal goes in; and whether the Leicester morale drops or whether they fight back like they vs Liverpool at Anfield.
I don't expect a repeat of the score at the KP stadium. Leicester now manager-less and us coming off a bad loss to the enemy points to this being a big Arsenal win. I'm gonna say 4-0, Giroud x 2, Sanchez (if he plays) and Ramsey with Ramsey MotM. Again more in hope than expectation. Wenger's reluctance to start Rosicky ahead of Aaron is down to age but another bad performance and Rambo will have to get benched.
