Tel, Dorgu and 8 more of the Premier League’s biggest January Transfer Window incomers

The January transfer window closed on Monday, and Premier League sides were incredibly active across the last month or so in their respective bids to strengthen. The likes of Tottenham, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Manchester City all added new faces to their squads, and we’ve picked out 10 high-profile incomers that’ll look to make an immediate impact for their new sides.

For the purpose of this, we are looking at players who moved to England rather than those who transferred between Premier League sides, ruling out the likes of Axel Disasi and Marcus Rashford, who moved to Aston Villa from Chelsea and Manchester United, respectively.

Mathys Tel – Tottenham

There’s so often a deadline day twist, and Monday was no different as Tottenham wrapped up the signing of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich. Just last week Tel rejected the chance to move to Spurs, which left Manchester United and Arsenal as the frontrunners for the 19-year-old’s services. One call from Ange Postecoglu, and Tel was moving to Spurs on loan with an option to buy for €60m. The versatile teenager provides some much-needed quality on the Spurs frontline.

Patrick Dorgu – Manchester United

Manchester United endured a quiet window but did bring in a player who’ll suit Ruben Amorim’s tactics. The Portuguese boss favours a three-man backline, though the players at his disposal have so far struggled with the demands that come with playing at wing-back. Patrick Dorgu is the ideal addition, and the Dane will only improve in time. The youngster currently ranks second for ground duels won (113) in Serie A this season and while his attacking output hasn’t been great this season, Dorgu is a fine one-vs-one defender who’ll strengthen United down the left.

Nico Gonzalez – Manchester City

Manchester City were far and away the biggest spenders in the January window, with Nico Gonzalez joining on deadline day to swell the ranks. City were in dire need of a midfielder, but that it took so long to bring in a new body to strengthen in the middle of the park was a surprise in itself. Gonzalez is the ideal fit at the Etihad Stadium, with the Spaniard the clear heir to Rodri’s throne in Manchester. The Spanish pair are similar in both stature and style, with the 23-year-old a fine pick up from Porto.

Omar Marmoush – Manchester City

A return of 15 goals and nine assists reinforced Manchester City’s decision to sign Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt last month. The Egypt international goes some way to covering the departure of Julian Alvarez last summer with Marmoush able to play a number of roles across the frontline. He’s shown glimpses of his quality in his opening two appearances against Chelsea and Arsenal, and once he gets up to speed at the Etihad Stadium; he’ll prove a hugely effective weapon for head coach Pep Guardiola.

Marco Asensio – Aston Villa

Aston Villa added a number of attacking players in the winter window to ease the departure of Jhon Duran, bringing in Donyell Malen and Marcus Rashford from Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United, respectively. Marco Asensio is another to have made the move to Villa Park, the Spaniard leaving PSG on loan for the rest of the season. The 29-year-old started eight times for the French side in the first half of the campaign having been directly involved in six goals, scoring four times, and it’ll be interesting to see how the former Real Madrid man is utilised by Unai Emery.

Emmanuel Agbadou – Wolves

Another to swap Ligue 1 for the Premier League, Emmanuel Agbadou won back-to-back WhoScored Player of the Match awards to see out his time with Reims, and the Ivorian has been a solid performer in the opening weeks of his time with Wolves. The proactive 27-year-old has shown a knack for being in the right place at the right time to alleviate pressure on his side’s goal, and isn’t afraid to get stuck in to rob opponents of possession. Wolves may have missed out on Kevin Danso, the Austrian instead ending up at Tottenham, but Agbadou has proven a fine pick up for the relegation threatened Midlands outfit.

Antonin Kinsky – Tottenham

Tottenham made an immediate splash in the January window by signing goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague. The youngster made his debut in the EFL Cup win over Liverpool and hasn’t looked back. In the absence of Guglielmo Vicario, the Czech shotstopper has made the number one spot his own. Indeed, the Italian will find it tough to reclaim his place between the sticks once back at full fitness following a broken ankle. Kinsky has shown impressive command of his area, while his distribution has also benefitted a Spurs side that looks to dominate possession.

Abdukodir Khusanov – Manchester City

Abdukodir Khusanov’s Manchester City debut didn’t quite go according to plan. The Uzbek committed an error and was booked inside the opening four minutes before being hauled off at half time of City’s eventual 3-1 win over Chelsea last month. Even so, there is a good reason why the Cityzens spent big to land the 20-year-old from Lens. An aggressive, forward-thinking centre-back who isn’t one to shy away from a physical battle, Khusanov will improve in time, with City prepared to splash the cash to oversee his development.

Stefanos Tzimas – Brighton

Brighton were prepared to let Evan Ferguson leave on loan following the arrival of Greek youngster Stefanos Tzimas from Nürnburg. The 18-year-old showcased his qualities in the opening months of the season as he scored 10 goals across 17 2.Bundesliga appearances. Liverpool were credited with an interest in the teenager, but Tzimas opted for a move to the south coast in order to garner regular game time. Brighton have landed themselves a decent finisher, and one who can carry the ball forward if needs must.

Michael Kayode – Brentford

Football Manager players will have enjoyed seeing Michael Kayode complete his move to Brentford. Fiorentina were prepared to loan the 20-year-old to the Bees despite his potential, with a lack of game time convincing Kayode to swap Florence for west London. The young right-back made his debut for Brentford off the bench on Sunday and while he couldn’t help his side to a result against Tottenham, the Italian is a solid addition to Thomas Frank’s side.
