Man United Deadline Day Rumour: Former Villa star to secure dramatic late transfer?
Manchester United have made their standout winter signing with the addition of Patrick Dorgu to bolster Ruben Amorim’s left wing-back options. Having heavily backed Erik ten Hag in the market, United were aware that the personnel at Amorim’s disposal didn’t suit his three-man defensive needs. Dorgu, then, is a solid addition to the side.
United may not yet be done, however. With Casemiro expected to depart sooner rather than later, they need bodies in the middle of the park. Ball winners are key for Amorim’s system and while Manuel Ugarte is a handy option for the United boss – the Uruguayan really shot to prominence during their respective time together at Sporting CP – the Premier League giants would benefit from another addition.
As such, they have been linked with a dramatic 11th hour swoop for Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz. The Brazilian left Aston Villa for the Old Lady last summer due to PSR issues that forced the Villans’ hand. A quick return to the Premier League, then, could be on the cards.
Manchester City, who are closing in on a move for FC Porto’s Nico Gonzalez, were linked with a move for former player Luiz before turning their attention to the Spaniard. That leaves United with a seemingly clear run for the Brazil international, though the clock is ticking…
Douglas Luiz Next Club Odds
With hours to go until the January transfer window closes, United are currently as short as 4/6 to be Luiz’s next club. The 26-year-old would be an immediate upgrade on Casemiro as a midfield option for Amorim, and a better fit than Kobbie Mainoo as a partner for Ugarte. Having struggled to make an impact with Juventus – Luiz has started just three league games under Thiago Motta – a return to England could give the former Villa man the perfect chance to kick back into gear.
Time is against United, however. They could yet file a deal sheet that would grant the club additional time to complete a move for Luiz but they have to act quickly if they are, as rumours suggest, secure the services of the midfielder.
