Team News

Southampton
Arsenal
  • Cédric Soares is still out for the home side, so Jérémy Pied will continue at right-back.
  • Shane Long is expected to recover from his injury but will have to settle for a place on the bench, while Mario Lemina and Nathan Redmond will push for starts on Sunday.
  • Per Mertesacker was not risked on Thursday, which suggests Arsene Wenger doubts Shkodran Mustafi will be fit in time to feature against Southampton this weekend.
  • No other changes are expected from Arsene Wenger despite their 3-1 defeat to Manchester United last weekend.

Prediction

  • Southampton have limped along all season. They have lost three of their last five and managed just one clean sheet in their last 10.
  • Defensive mistakes proved costly for Arsenal last weekend after they slipped to a 3-1 defeat at home to Manchester United despite having 15 shots on target.
  • Arsene Wenger has called on his players to vent their frustrations in their next matches and that should reflect in the scoreline here. The Gunners have slipped up against Southampton in the recent past but should have enough to overcome Mauricio Pellegrino's side on Sunday.

  • We played terribly, in attack as well as defence. There wasn't a single Arsenal player barring Giroud who deserves a 7. Really should have lost this game but they say it evens itself out throughout the course of a season.....

  • Austin seems to score whenever he starts at the moment.

  • I suspected that it was stupid by Wenger to "rest" Mertesacker. He hasn't played more than 540 minutes before this match, he didn't need rest, he needed 90 minutes in his legs to be prepared for the match against Southampton. Wenger is tragically stupid.

  • @Gusjaros- It wasn't that he was rested per se, it was the fact he cannot play two games in a week so had he played on Thursday, he'd have been unavailable for this one and Wenger would have needed to start Holding who has shown to be far form ready at this level. The BFG was never supposed to play in the league, he was to be the central of a 'cup' back 3 with Koscielny, Mustafi and Monreal to play exclusively in the league. He will be retiring at the end of the season to take up the role of academy manager and, reading between the lines, I get the feeling he would have preferred to retire after the F.A Cup final. Just a hunch. Anyways, Koscielny and Monreal were equally bad today.

  • @Gusjaros He isn't good enough for this level anymore. Simple as that.

  • Arsenal win 0-2

  • Over 2,5 goals

  • I agree with WhoScored's prediction of 3-1 to Arsenal. Forster has been in excellent form recently and I just hope he doesn't emulate his Emirates performance of '16 because after de Gea in the last game, that will tip me over the edge.

  • Arsenal win 4 goals, SOU 1-4 ARS

  • 0-3

  • Saints 1- 2 Arsenal
