Team News

Everton
Aston Villa
  • Everton have recovered both Mason Holgate and Andre Gomes from injury and both will likely return to the starting XI.
  • The return of Holgate is particularly timely as Everton have now lost Yerry Mina to a quad strain. Young centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite is another option.
  • The hosts will also hope to have Andre Gomes back available having lost the midfield battle in the week, while Alex Iwobi may well return to the side.
  • Kortney Hause was injured in the warm up in midweek and may continue to miss out, while Matt Targett's return to action was rushed through after Neil Taylor suffered a hamstring injury.
  • Following a very rare clean sheet and one of Villa's most dominant displays of the season, changes are unlikely elsewhere, though Mbwana Samatta failed to take his chance up front once again.
  • Conor Hourihane justified his selection against Palace and will keep his place in a three-man midfield alongside John McGinn and Douglas Luiz, who has been the side's strongest and most consistent performer post-lockdow.

Prediction

  • Everton were well beaten last time out by Wolves and Carlo Ancelotti will expect a response here, even if his side have little other incentive compared to their visitors.
  • In a way, Villa's objective is now more clear than ever. No longer able to rely on the inadequacies of those around them to remain in the fight for survival, they must win two, if not all of their last three matches to even have a hope of avoiding the drop.
  • Dean Smith's side responded well to victories from both West Ham and Watford in midweek and know that with those two teams facing off on Friday, this is a huge chance to narrow the gap to safety to one point with just two games remaining thereafter.
