Team News

Aston Villa
Crystal Palace
  • While Dean Smith understandably pointed towards an incorrect penalty decision that turned the game against United in midweek, it was a familiar story for Villa, who conceded after a bright spell and didn't show a reaction.
  • There's no real encouragement in terms of being able to effect matches from the bench either, so Dean Smith could name an unchanged side despite back-to-back defeats.
  • However, Keinan Davis has rotated in and out with Ally Samatta up front and may return, while John McGinn looks a long way off full fitness and may also be dropped.
  • Elsewhere Frederic Guilbert is back fit, awaiting his first start post lockdown and could get it here.
  • Without James Tomkins, Martin Kelly and now Gary Cahill, Scott Dann and Mamadou Sakho are Roy Hodgson's only fit centre-backs.
  • Elsewhere Jeff Schlupp is the only absentee, so the Eagles may name an otherwise unchanged lineup to that which caused Chelsea problems in midweek.
  • That would mean starts for former Villa duo Jordan Ayew and Christian Benteke

Prediction

  • Simply put, following positive results for both Watford and Bournemouth in midweek, Villa can wait no longer for their first league win since January and anything short of that may well be curtains for their survival hopes.
  • Palace are a favourable opponent in the sense that they have nothing to play for and approach the game off the back of four straight defeats, though they still put in an encouraging performance in midweek and pose a far greater attacking threat than their hosts at present.
  • It's difficult to see Villa scoring in a game, let alone more than once, which is usually a must given how infrequently they keep clean sheets. A draw is certainly a possibility here, though that would likely only delay the inevitable.
