Team News

Newcastle
Southampton
  • Joseph Willock didn't join in time to face Crystal Palace in midweek but will debut here.
  • Steve Bruce has confirmed Allan Saint-Maximin is now ready to start.
  • Southampton plunged into crisis in midweek with a 9-0 defeat away to Manchester United.
  • 19-year-old Alexandre Jankewitz was sent off on his full league debut within two minutes and is now banned for three games.
  • Jan Bednarek was also shown his marching orders but Southampton have successfully overturned it on appeal.
  • Deadline day signing Takumi Minamino must be wondering what he has joined but he is now free to debut for Ralph Hasenhuttl's side.
  • Unless one of Danny Ings or Che Adams are dropped, Hasenhuttl may change formation to get Minamino in the side. Playing him central midfield alongside James Ward-Prowse may leave them exposed defensively.
  • Kyle Walker-Peters' injury isn't as bad as first feared and he could return here. Kayne Ramsey is on standby to continue.
  • Oriol Romeu trained on Thursday and should return here, while Jannik Vestergaard has an outside chance of making it.
  • A minor muscle injury will keep Stuart Armstrong out of this one.

Prediction

  • Newcastle spurned a 1-0 lead over Crystal Palace on Tuesday night and ended up losing 2-1. They have lost seven of their last eight matches.
  • For the second season in a row Southampton have been thrashed 9-0 in a Premier League match. Ralph Hasenhuttl's side bounced back superbly from a 9-0 loss to Leicester last season and will now aim to do the same following defeat to Manchester United on Tuesday.
  • Southampton couldn't have asked for better teams to face immediately after a trouncing than this Newcastle but injuries and suspensions have decimated their squad. They had to name two goalkeepers on the bench against United just to fill their quota.
  • Steve Bruce is having a tough time as Newcastle manager and anything other than three points against a Southampton side that just got beat 9-0 would plunge his job into further doubt. The Magpies have at least won their last three home games against Southampton.
