Team News

Aston Villa
West Ham
  • Dean Smith has confirmed that Emiliano Martinez has returned to training for Aston Villa and his availability is a huge boost.
  • Injuries have completely cleared up for Dean Smith now and he has some big decisions to make about his system and personnel after a tough few weeks.
  • The first will surely be to revert to a back four following three consecutive defeats, though fitting both Ings and Watkins into the side is proving to be problematic to the rest of the team.
  • The latter may move out to the left unless Smith opts for a 4-4-2, with Leon Bailey, Emi Buendia, Bertrand Traore and Anwar El Ghazi offering further options in attack.
  • Elsewhere Jacob Ramsey may return following a superb first goal for the club last time out, while Marvelous Nakamba is also vying for a start in midfield.
  • David Moyes continues to manage his squad to superb effect and dumped holders Man City out of the Carabao Cup in midweek despite resting star men Declan Rice and Michail Antonio.
  • It was a strong lineup elsewhere, however, so he'll hope fatigue isn't an issue for a handful of players that may well start for the fourth time in the space of ten days.
  • Vladimir Coufal got some minutes in the cup after a short spell out injured and he is looking to reclaim his starting spot back from Ben Johnson.
  • Alex Kral is also back in training after isolating but may not make the matchday squad here.

Prediction

  • Villa are in a bit of a hole at the moment and while Smith could point to injuries and unavailability of some big names to this point, the return to fitness of the majority will leave him short of excuses if he can't arrest the slide.
  • West Ham, by contrast, are on cloud nine after four superb results in succession and are riding a wave of confidence that appears to be nullifying any effects of fatigue to this point.
  • The Hammers have picked up 10 points from 12 available away from home this season and look best placed to make that 13 from 15 against a new-look Villa side that is still lacking an identity.
