Team News

Benfica
Sporting
  • Ángel Di María is back to full fitness and could be part of the starting XI, as he usually shines in big occasions such as Saturday's derby. If that's the case, Amdouni should return to the bench.
  • Álvaro Carreras served a match ban against Estoril and is back available, which is huge news for Benfica. The Spaniard should start at left-back.
  • Coach Bruno Lage has used a 3-man back line at times and it wouldn't be a shock if that happened here in order to neutralize Gyokeres.
  • Quenda hasn't started lately but he might be back in the starting XI after making an impact from the bench last time around, maybe replacing Geny Catamo... who scored in each of his last two appearences against SL Benfica.
  • Hjulmand was rested against Gil Vicente and should feature from the outset here, pairing with Morita at the middle of the park, which could see Zen Debast dropping into defence, where he should be partnered with Quaresma and Inácio.
  • Despite scoring last time around, it wouldn't be a surprise if Maxi Araújo started on the bench as Rui Borges could opt for a more defensive option (Matheus Reis) at left-wing back.

Prediction

  • As in previous games, Benfica had a great start against Estoril and could have been leading by more than two goals at half-time. However, the Eagles couldn't maintain their momentum and struggled to beat Estoril last weekend. They seem to shine in big games, as reflected by the duels against FC Porto (two 4-1 wins) and the displays against Barcelona.
  • Sporting can count themselves lucky to have beaten Gil Vicente last weekend. The lions were trailing until the 80th minute, but two goals from rebounds gave them the lead. Although the win was morale-boosting, the truth is that here they showed a worrying lack of offensive efficiency that will have to be addressed for the derby.
  • It's not an overstatement to say that this will be one of the most important matches in Liga Portugal in recent years. A Benfica win by more than one goal will see the eagles crowned champions, and a Sporting win by any margin will give the title to the lions.
  • The hosts may be under more pressure, but the fact that they're playing at home could ease that anxiety. So expect a game with plenty of emotion... and little risk. A draw is on the cards.
