Team News

Newcastle
Norwich
  • Newcastle will be without first choice goalkeeper Tim Krul for the rest of the season through a knee injury sustained on international duty. Steve McClaren will also be without reserve goalkeeper Karl Darlow for a month, meaning Rob Elliot will be have a run between the sticks.
  • The Magpies are suffering from a real injury crisis at the back with McClaren likely to be without up to seven defenders for the reception of Norwich City on Sunday.
  • Daryl Janmaat is an injury doubt after he withdrew from the Netherlands squad over the international break and McClaren will be hoping he will be fit to start. If not, Vurnon Anita will have to fill in at right-back.
  • McClaren could revert back to a 4-2-3-1 system following their 6-1 drubbing at the hands of Manchester City, with Georginio Wijnaldum given a more advanced role as Newcastle seek their first win of the season.
  • Alex Neil's injury concerns are far fewer than those of his opposite number at Newcastle. Norwich will be without Gary Hooper, Youssouf Mulumbu and Lewis Grabban for the trip to Newcastle, which should provide too many headaches as they are not regular starters.
  • Nathan Redmond should be recalled to the starting XI after missing out on a starting berth in their 2-1 defeat to Leicester before the international break.

Prediction

  • Newcastle are yet to win a single game in this season and are already five points from safety after just eight matches. Things looked promising after they drew 2-2 with champions Chelsea but then they slipped to a humilating 6-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City.
  • Norwich City have made a quiet start to life back in the top-flight but will also know they need a win here having failed to take three points from any of their last three matches. To do that, Alex Neil will have to become the first Canaries manager to record a league victory at St James' Park in the Premier League era. In fact, Norwich fans have to go back until September 1988 to find the last time they won away to Newcastle in the league.
